But that might just be showing my age a little.

Then mass effect 3 happened and unless you count SWTOR I haven't really played any other game online since.

I think my first MP was Contra on the NES, but I could be mistaken it has been so long. First online MP was SOCOM on the PS2.
I guess I should've said online MP... Because you're right, NES had a bunch of 2 player games... Hell.. my cousins and I played Atari 2600, 5200, and Intellivision before the NES was ever released if we're going back that far. Tank Commander, some baseball game, Gyrus...
It wasn't a MP game but do you remember the game Tempest? Would've loved to play that on Acid..
Don't recall a game called Tempest, but that doesn't mean I didn't play it at some point. I am not quite old enough for Atari days (though I did have one).

I always preferred the co-op games, and was big in the MMO's. Ultima Online was really what got me into the multiplayer as truly co-op. After that played most of the others, but having to upgrade a PC every few years got really costly, so the switch to console was easier. Fell in love with the ME games from release. I was always a fan of the KOTOR series, and was really disappointed by the first star wars MMO, so this game was a nice little find when it came out.
That said, this is by far my favorite game I have played online to date. I like the community and yes the game itself has some issues, but not shabby for a first try. Still remember the demo days and trying to solo bronze only to get stomped by some assault troopers. I look forward to playing this game to server shut down, or atleast until Destiny.

Than I became a console scrub, Soul Caliber series (1-3) ate my last brains.
I still miss Taki ever since I return to masterrace

I know there are better multiplayer experiences out there like LoL, Guild wars, Planetside, etc. but I refuse to get sucked into MMOs period - subscription or freemium. That's a red line for me. Knowingly participating in thinly-veiled skinner-box experiments designed to extract money from you freaks me the **** out.
ME3 is easy to pick up and put down and you're under no obligations which is what I like about it. Your not forced to buy overpriced map packs every couple of months. The microtransactions are optional and the business practices aren't exploitative.
Spent my first year on Xbox, then started from scratch last year on PS3 aftering get fed up of paying for live. It was interesting going from N7 2000 to N7 1 with common gear and checking out the other side of the fence. I liked it and decided to stay.

I remember playing UT2K3 back when a 400ms ping was the norm...
Nowadays, when i can get a stable internet connection, ME3MP is the only online game i play.

Guildwars I think I played on and off for at least ~5 years. Think I just liked to farm gold a lot so I could have the most gorgeous characters. I didn't really do any PvP until much later. Got hooked on that really fast though.
And when those pokemon online battle simulators started emerging, I spent way too much time on those as well (admittedly I still do)
So I feel like my total time spent on ME3MP is pretty miniscule compared to all of the above.

Have played COD2 mp for about 15 minutes before I Got yelled at over the mic? After that experience I thought that I was cured from online gaming (just too old for that crap), until I was tempted to play the ME3 MP part after completing the campaign. Haven't played anything else since. :-)

I play halo and cod every now and again usually at the request of a friend but everyime I do and you encounter these individuals I'm always reminded of Yahtzee's zero punctuation review of halo 3 where he describes halo fans as 'highly evolved meta****s' who do what they have evolved to do at full volume in your ear. He once said he didn't bother reviewing online sections of games because of his low tolerance for 'repetition and tosspots' which captures this sentiment perfectly. It's exactly why I don't play cod very often if I can help it. Mass Effect on the other hand has quite a different audience and I'm usually pleasantly surprised online. We're a pleasant bunch.
