My first was Diablo 2 i think .. i pumped a lot of hours into that sucker
Or maybe it was Mechwarrior 2? Both around the same time in the early 90's
Yeah, there's only so many Hell cow runs and PvP matches I could do before burning out .. but I played almost full time for 3 years also

For me it was the legendary weapons that had me coming back. When I finally got them all several times, it was making the characters specifically for them weapons.MaxCrushmore wrote...

First MP game was Starcraft for me
I cannot imagine you on Starcraft lol. I bet people mistook you for South Korean because you kicked their ass so hard
Edit: OT, I've been mp'ing since I was like 4, first one I remember was SSF. First online MP that I cared about was CoD4 (not really super srs) and after that Demon's Souls and Dark Souls.

My first online multiplayer would have been Diablo, which was 1996.

There was no such thing as a PC master race back then. We were the one true gods. These PC players now are just a mere shadow of our former selves.

Later came UT2003 and then, for a long time, nothing.
Until ME3 MP.

Technically it would have been Warcraft 2, which came out in 1995. If you want to count things that was really just two people taking turns at a game, then even earlier than that.

Wasn't that Diablo 2 in 96'?
Warcraft 2 I still consider one of my all time favorite games, Warcraft was revolutonary .. then they improved it significantly in the sequel ...

Wow some of you guys are young pups. I started playing MP back before they even had graphics. They were called MUDs. The first graphical games that recall off the top of my head were World of Warcraft 2/3, Diablo and Command and Conquer. Back in a time where you spent more time fixing SoundBlaster issues than actually playing. I switched over to FPS with Unreal Tournament and Doom (it's also where I formed the opinion that most pvp'ers are douchebags).

I recall messing around with an off-brand dial-up modem's initialization string was a PITA. And then there are those connection interruptions when someone would pick up the phone, an incoming call with call-waiting, line noise/static because there's a thunderstorm, etc. <_<

Have played COD2 mp for about 15 minutes before I Got yelled at over the mic? After that experience I thought that I was cured from online gaming (just too old for that crap), until I was tempted to play the ME3 MP part after completing the campaign. Haven't played anything else since. :-)
edit - have played some Star Wars Battlefront 1+2 on the PS2 online (years ago now if that counts) :-)
I play halo and cod every now and again usually at the request of a friend but everyime I do and you encounter these individuals I'm always reminded of Yahtzee's zero punctuation review of halo 3 where he describes halo fans as 'highly evolved meta****s' who do what they have evolved to do at full volume in your ear. He once said he didn't bother reviewing online sections of games because of his low tolerance for 'repetition and tosspots' which captures this sentiment perfectly. It's exactly why I don't play cod very often if I can help it. Mass Effect on the other hand has quite a different audience and I'm usually pleasantly surprised online. We're a pleasant bunch.
Agreed!

ME3 MP is however my first significant multiplayer gaming experience where I've played with random Internet people as opposed to just friends. Except for the MUDs and MUSEs I suppose, but they don't really count. PvP gaming with random Internet people never appealed to me but co-op gaming is fine.

Diablo 2 was around 2000 I believe. It was definately after I got Half-Life and Starcraft in 1998.
I still have my old Warcraft 2 disc and play it using Dosbox from time to time.

ooo .. just remembered!
My first multiplayer game was 'Mule' on the Commodore 64
That would be coming up on 30 years ago ..
Very nice - did not think anyone here would remember M.U.L.E., which was also my first MP game and also on the C64. We played tons of 4-man Tournament games back then. High Crystite Plots all day, every day :-).
A decade later we played the arcade game "Trog" a lot, also with teams of four. Then it was Doom on LAN in the mid/late late 90s, NHL Hockey and later the occasional Quake 3 match. Did not play much online until about 2005, then started with Trackmania, which was great for several years. Not much else online until ME3MP, but it sure seems 4-player co-op is something I like quite a bit.

Mass Effect is better because, at its toughest, I still find it very challenging. I'm not talking about Gold, that's boring and easy. I can't mod the game to make myself invincible like I did on Borderlands 2.
