Worse than Ancient Rock Wraith! The high dragon wouldn't keep still, sicked her children on us, whatever a group of dragons is called. Flock, pride, whatever. And she spit on us. Everyone level 17, this battle was tedious and my jaw kept dropping at what the game was asking me to handle + all the repositioning!

Yes, the repositioning. My problem is / was: Aveline and Isabella kept sabotaging the battle. They moved in to attack the dragon when they were ordered to hold and set to passive, yet they would lose interest in the teenage winged dragons after a single attack when they were set to aggressive and ordered to attack.

Back and forth, charge on their own toward mother dragon then I order them far away then they charge again because they think it's funny. Order them to attack teenage dragon, they lose interest after one hit, right click to re-issue attack.

Why all this chaos and babysitting with them? Near the end I had it with their insubordination and sent them in to be squashed while my mages dealt the final struggling kill. The reward on the dragon was satisfactory. Boneyard is safe.

Nightmare must be for the napoleons, washingtons, and the infinitely patient.

That is another fight where dog is very helpful. He draws a lot of enemy agro, tanks like a boss and if I remember correctly is immune to fire.

Isabela against the dragon? No - it should be ranged characters only - or possibly Aveline to hold aggro and keep it pinned if you MUST. And yes, even then it is a massive, tedious pain.

That said, it does sound like you need a fiddle with A's and I's tactics. They should attack who you tell them to attack unless you've got 'Enemy - Target of Hawke - Attack' or something set up in tactics.

I'm going to try Barkspawn next time I face the high dragon. I can use the tank and decoy. His fire resistance will only help on nightmare. I usually bring Fenris or Aveline, Varric and Anders. I can hold position on party members and keep checking on them to make sure they've got something to fight and are doing it. I'd like to suggest unchecking any tactics boxes listing enemy rank that come before general Enemy: Any. I've had Varric standing in one place launching one useless attack after another at the dragon on the ledge while getting annihilated by the spit and little guys. My tactic between the last wave of little guys and the dragon coming back is to move Hawke from one end of the field to the other while the dragon is still on the ledge. Sometimes it works great and everyone keeps moving and spreads out so no one person gets nailed. Usually what happens is Fenris or Aveline stands in front of the ledge getting hammered while flipping back and forth between a skill and a basic attack. I've tried fiddling with tactics and sometimes just give up and set Anders to Panacea. The final showdown is pretty straightforward on hard. Reset everyone's tactics to where they were and spot-correct them if need be.

You can add another group that plays on nightmare - masochists.  I made the partner LOL screaming "D4mn it, Fenris, you bastard!  You killed me and my little dog too!"

Good luck and remember - it's supposed to be fun. If you want to hurl something through the window, take a break, reload the save before and try again. I've had a couple really awful battles that turned out entirely differently when I reloaded. There's also no shame in turning down the difficulty for a single battle.

I did turn down the difficulty once. During the fight with that second varatek ( sp, that stick insect creature that spits venom pools again ), I was doing well but it was taking so long. Then I needed to pee and decided to pull back out of combat to save. But the stairs were blocked by an invisible wall and my entire group got stunlocked by the varatek's rapid venom volleys at the base of the stairs.

I was so pissed that I turned difficulty down to casual until the varatek's(sp) health was back down where it was.

Yes, I don't know what is happening with Isabella and Aveline. They frequently lose interest in fighting now, even though they are set to aggressive / custom ( all slots empty and unchecked ). It's as if they think they are set to passive. In fact, I don't remember Aveline having a custom option before ( I had to edit one of her other modes ).

Thanks guys, for trying to help me. I'll try different stuff, maybe I missed something.

Isabella did have one trick against the High Dragon, which was Brand ( +10% crit from everyone ). But that's soon to be replaced by Merril's Death Hex ( 100% crit from everyone ).

Against the High Dragon, it was Hawke ( mage ), Aveline, Merril, and Isabella. So it was just Hawke and Merril carrying the battle doing plinky cold ranged damage.

The companions can get bit disobedient at times, some are worse than others. I've had issues with Aveline before where she would stand there doing nothing unless I moved Hawke in closer to the fight. I've not really used Isabella so not sure if she has similar issues.

Setting the companions to aggressive behaviour stops them running away from enemies. If they are set to passive usually they will try to get away from any aoe attacks. When set to aggressive they will stay up close to enemies unless you manually order them to move. If you're having issues setting up custom tactics you probably should have a look at suicidalbaby's thread on it. The man knows his stuff.
