Right now I am playing a sentinel in single player, and I am trying to decide on an SMG to settle on before I spend money to upgrade one. I would use an assault rifle, but the SMG can have a power amplifier equipped. I am thinking of either the Hurricane or the Tempest with a recoil reducing mod, and a power amp mod. This is more for finishing off enemies or for when I get surprised by an enemy at close range. I will also carry a high damage and accuracy pistol for when I need accuracy, but the SMG will be used most of the time. I just tried the hurricane with a recoil reducing mod in the first cerberus lab raid you get, and it did pretty well. I have yet to acquire the tempest for comparison. I know that the tempest does less damage per shot, but has greater accuracy, more ammo capacity, and only uses 1 unit of ammo per shot compared to the Hurricane's 2 ammo units per shot.

I've beaten the game once before, but only used an assault rifle as it was before they released the last 2 major DLCs, and I'm just getting back to the game after over a year away. I never really tried the SMGs in question in my previous run.

Edit: after some testing at the firing range, the Shurkin seems like a contender as well. I am no longer just comparing 2 SMGs.

So, I need to pick an SMG that is a fairly decent gun for close to maybe mid range. I will mainly need it for finishing blows on enemies after using my powers. I also do not need the ability to provide lengthly sustained fire.

Hurricane is TEH BEST.
Recoil gets better when you level up, at X it doesn't really need recoil damper mod anymore. And if you carry a Heavy Pistol for long rang anyway, I wouldn't care about Hurricane's recoil and ammo so much.
One more thing about power amp mod: I think it only works if you have it on the weapon you use right now.

If you don't have the Collector's Edition, Hurricane isn't an option. Next best choice would be the Blood Pack Punisher if you've bought that weapon DLC (costs 3 or 4 bucks).

If you don't have either of those, then they all kinda suck. In that case, I'd go pistol, where there are multiple good options (Paladin, Talon, Executioner, Arc Pistol, Scorpion), If you still insist on an SMG, I guess I would go with the Tempest out of all the bad options remaining.

I forgot that I got the N7 Digital Deluxe edition lol. So that's why I have the Hurricane and other people don't! Well, I guess the hurricane may be my weapon of choice unless someone can argue another one is better.

Personally I love using the Hornet, there are better SMGs out there, but its got good range and the three round burst is just so satisfying

IIRC the BBP does the most DPS, but I hate the handling, so I always go for the Hurricane. Otherwise I think the Tempest is the best option, as I don't think the SP Locust got the massive headshot multiplier the MP version got.

Hurricane also weighs virtually nothing with an ultralight mod, making it an alluring sidearm to pair with something like the Talon, or really any powerhouse weapon that still allows for fast cooldowns.

I would always save Citadel for last in SP so I didn't really care about power amp mods and just opted for the wraith as my main weapon with my sentinel.

Just by way of reference, the Hurricane I does 60.4 damage per shot, the Tempest I does 35.7. Single clip DPS for Tempest I is 357, single clip DPS for Hurricane I is 604. Hurricane wins in a landslide.

In my last playthrough, I went with a sniper rifle and smg loadout. The N7 Valiant and N7 Hurricane were my go to weapons.

I don't understand the hate for the Hurricane. The recoil is manageable, and it does enough damage to take down Banshees/Mechs/Brutes pretty quickly. I used it with a Vanguard and was really happy with the damage output following a charge.

When not using it close range short bursts were fine. With, or without stability mod.

I like the Punisher better than the Hurricane in SP.  Tempest and Hornet are also ok.

Also, all the N7 and preorder bonus weapons are on the game disc regardless of version, so they are all accessible with save editors and / or keyboard bindings.

LOL, after all of this debate over choosing an SMG, I got hold of a scorpion and it is my new primary weapon. It's been great for my purposes. Also take note that I play on normal difficulty. I'm not a hardcore FPS player. Before this the closest thing to FPS I played was Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Higher difficulties usually mean more hitpoints and higher damage output for enemies.
So if you can beat the game on normal, chances are you can beat the game on insanity.

The best SMG choice really depends on the other weapons you're carrying. The Hurricane and the Punisher are excellent weapons, but poor choices if the other weapon is very a inaccurate shotgun like the Raider, for example. In that case, the Locust would be a better choice, unless you're willing to carry a third weapon for long range combat.

Hi TheTman,

I've beaten ME3 about 8 times total, and have both weapon DLC packs. I've mixed and matched several different class/weapon combinations, so if you're still interested in the topic, I'd be happy to give you my personal input.

So from my experience, SMG's in ME3 single player is best used in very close quarters, against either a crowd or a big armored enemy (atlas, prime, ravanger, brute, banshee). You say you're considering a Hurricane or Tempest, but I only recommend those as secondary weapons. In the single player, those SMG's practically have a singular purpose, because from mid-to-long range they are very inconsistent, even with weapon upgrades and recoil reducers.

If you are looking to use an SMG as a primary, or for more than something strictly situational, I recommend the locust. Though it's been nerfed significantly from ME2, the locust has little to no recoil, good damage, and has a massive headshot bonus multiplier. Since the weapon is already accurate with very low recoil, getting headshots is very easy, thus very rewarding in the damage it can dish out.

If you simply want to use an SMG for situational means, then I recommend either the N7 Hurricane or Blood Pack Punisher. Both of them have a very high damage output and high ammo capacity. The Hurricane is stronger than the Punisher, however the Punisher has a built-in armor-piercing mechanic. Basically, the Punisher has natural piercing, perfect for killing huge enemies and cutting through cerberus guardians, while you'd have to mod the Hurricane to achieve the same effect.

If you don't want to read all that, allow me to briefly summarize. Best crowd/boss SMG's = Hurricane or Punisher. Punisher is better for bosses, Hurricane is better for everything else. Best primary SMG choice = Locust. If you have neither weapon DLC's or the N7 Edition weapons, then the only logical choices are Tempest and Locust, because the Shuriken and Hornet are pretty lame and underwhelming.

Hope this helps in your desicion. Have a good playthrough :)
