Not just Star Metal, but rather the concept of unique materials for crafting.

We also had dragon scales in DA:O for armor.

In Awakening, we also got Heartwood for a Bow or Shield, the Golem Shell Armor crafted from the chest plate of a massive unique golem, and of course Vigilance, forged from a single bone from an ancient dragon.

I love the idea of unique and weird materials to craft personalized arms and armor, so long as it is rare.

That's one of my most hated easter eggs in modern gaming.

Easter eggs should be subtle references that fit in with the worlds setting. That wasn't.

Who said its the most hated? Just because it wasnt subtle, doesnt make it bad. Plus we get a great weapon out of it

I totally agree with you on this point.  Having the unique crafting materials makes my character feel different from everyone else in the game.  In legends and myths you hear of mighty heros wielding various weapons he or she acquired over their adventures.  It's a similar feeling in games.

In Dragon Age Origins alone, I started off as just another mage who became a Grey Warden.  After the King was betrayed by his closest advisor and almost the entirety of my order was killed, I traveled far and wide to unite Dwarves, Elves, Humans, Mages, and Templars to fight the Darkspawn Horde.  I wore the bones of a high dragon that I slayed as armor and wielded a sword made from a metal that fell from the heavens, while capable of still wielding magic efficiently after having shared the memories of an ancient, Elven, Arcane Warrior.

See how badass that sounds?  We're able to build up and create our own stories in Dragon Age.  Unique crafting materials means that we're able to do the same for our weapons.
