Ok I just read about the characters at the web site and a little of their back story, but then I just wondered miself about something. will we (the player) be able to customize our NPC companions? like some weapons or armor that our main player doesnt need anymore? what about status when leveling up? will I be able to in adition of adding the right companions for my character be able to adjust those companion's powers and abilitiesto be more suitable for my style of game?
just wondering.

You'll be able to choose their skills, talents, equipment, etc.

You can give them armor, weapons, level them up manually. Alistair can be an archer if you like. Make Morrigan your healer. Give Sten a sword and shield instead. It's just a matter of giving them the right stats to make them efficient, I am pretty certain they just come with a few basic 'free' talents and skills, then you can do what you'd like.

Keep in mind that when you find them, they'll already have skills/talents/etc that you won't be able to redistribute.
You don't just find them all at level 1. They've been living lives of their own before you met them and their statistics will reflect that.

You will be able to totally customize them but its true they will start with there own abilities. For example Alistair will start with the Templar Specialization. If you want you can build him around that or totally ignore it and not develop it more if you ant him to focus on archery for example.

wont they be weaker if you decide not to put points into the specialization they have currently when they join your party

They may not be as strong later in the game if you start putting points into a different specialization. For example, if you started to put points into archery for Alistair, by the end of the game he may not have the top end skills that an archer would have if they started in that tree initially, but by no means does it make them completely useless in that specialization.

Alistair may be a poor example as you get him earlier in the game. He'd be a fairly low level, so you could theoretically do what ever you want with him. Someone that you get later would already have more talents, skills, etc already assigned so you wouldn't be able to customize them as much. That's not to say they will be absolutely crap if you try to cahnge them around, but (for the sake of argument) Leliana will always have that one or two archery points, or Wynne will always have some healing spell.
