OK after reading some threads around here I noticed many people really hate Carver. I used to hate him too but then A friend of mine showed me a way to change him and at the end of Act III he becomes friendlier and even more accepting than Bethany this way. I felt obligated to show you the way to see this side of Carver so if by any chance he appears in DA:I you won't hate him.
So here is what you gonna do. Try to get as many friendship approval you can for Carver. Carver starts as a rival and his rivalry point is 55 when you reach kirkwall and as a rival Carver is against mages but you don't have to side against mages to get the required amount of friendship. See this page on more info on Carver friendship:
dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Carver_Hawke/Approval
ALWAYS take Carver to deep roads with Anders. If he becomes a templar its impossible to max his friendship anymore. Deciding to take him grants friendhip bonus and not taking him grants rivalry besides once in deep roads there are other opportunities to gain more friendship like saving Sandal and giving Carver to grey wardens aka saving his life.
If you have Legacy DLC you can get whooping +30 friendship with Carver if you take him with you.
All things said when you max his friendship before end of the game, when he joins you at the end of the game with max friendship he apologizes for the way he treated Hawke whole their life and he then says he understands the mage's plight and is willing to stand by their brother/sister side till death, possibily meaning Carver is abandoning grey wardens to support their sibiling. With max friendship Carver will go FURIOUS if mage hawke sides with Templars but won't abandon Hawke.
I loved this Carver.
FCUK rival Carver.

I like Caver, he's the better written of the Siblings but this should be in the DA2 forums.

I like Carver. That's why I didn't choose to be a mage.

It will need personal experience to understand, Carver is for making Sarcastic/Charming Hawke look better, He will act like an ass and then got owned by your Hawke almost everytime.
While Beth is for Diplomatic/Helpful, fit for a giver - protective sis/bro. The kind that would get along with the reasonable - kind personality of your.
I prefer Carver because I'm the eldest in real life and that why I can tolerate him, plus, It's fun to have a whining little brother that you could tease and own him in arguement.
As for your (intended?) attempt to change the people who don't like him, You can use all the reason in the world and they'll still hate him because he's just simply too annoying to have around.
You can't get everyone to like the same flavor.

Wrong forum, hon.
Also I hope you didn't want to romance him in DA2.

I'm actually already doing that. On this playthrough I'm friending Carver. Using the wiki, I'm making sure I get EVERY SINGLE friendship point in the entire game that you can get with him. It helps that I'm a diplomatic Hawke, the kind of Hawke who would probably do best at handling Carver when he's annoying and the personality type that is nicest to him.

I like the twerp. I usually take him around nearly everywhere just to hear his banter. Going the friendship route with grey warden carver is my favorite but I've got a tough time maxing him out because there are some quests I could get friendship with him for and choose another companion instead who "needs" an approval change more. I've never seen him fit out over Hawke siding with the templars but that probably has more to do with my Act 3 side preference.
I have most fun playing sarcastic Hawke but often choose diplomatic dialogue with him because I think Hawke would have to be serious sometimes and best to do that in front of a brother you can blackmail to keep quiet with amusing childhood anecdotes.
