when using barkskin potions, especially when shapeshifted into bigger creatures, i realized how ugly lowres the texture is (i have to add: this in full HD with project Facelift, Weapons redux by the Amethyst dragon, shields by projectq, cep heads and armor from the later official patches. so it sticks out a bit)

i was wondering: has anyone done a upscaled version of the texture yet, or something else, to make it appear more pleasent to they eye?

does someone at least know the filename of the texture, please? i might give it a try with a simple C&P doubling of the resolution myself

I belive it's vdu_tex_bark.tga.  FWIW, there's an accompanying .TXI file which it uses in-game.  I did a quick search through the random hacks with NWN Explorer Reborn and found what appears to be a different, higher-res, version in one of Lord of Worms' haks from his PW.  The original is 64x64 and Worms' is 256x256.

Here's a pack for you to play with.

FWIW and IIRC (LOL!) most procedural textures (like shinywater) can cause problems if they're over 256x256 in size.  However, because the TXI for the texture (in this case) merely prevents downsampling, you may be able to go higher, if you like.  Report back what you find!

Another alternate approach (as a player) which I've seen on some PW's is that the the bark visual only last a few seconds but the effects are as normal.

thank you both.
yes, i know the ultima ratio would be to disable to visuals.
but LoW's texture does the trick quite nicelly actually. its green, but that's ok.
i used gimp to upsace it further to 2048 using the most complex algorythm, then finally downscale it to 1024 again.
it works at that resolution, and while not gaining any sharpness with the process, at least it's butter smooth in it's scaling (no square artifacts that is).
so yes, the TXI is great and allows for higher resoltutions.

1024 is still not high enough to look good on a Ice giants (that's as spoilery as i will get, currently playing SoU) and cloaks, but if 1024 doesn't help here, higher resolution will not be the answer anyway.
i guess that is as far as it canget in NWN, thank you again both for your help.

edit: after some fiddling with color sliders it's now brown with yellow moss. awesome. i'll settle for that. thank you again very much

sure, here it is. it's nothing special really. sharpen wouldn't turn out great on the texture, and i wish i could get the yellow parts a bit greener, but alas my skills are limited to fiddling with sliders already present in the program.
i had to chuckle at the thought of a picture of a picture @ Master Jax

edit: second version, more green, darker brown. requires the other download's txi file

edit 2: here's a picture of the picture ;-) second version
Image IPB

as you can see: a nice brown with lots of yellow and green moss, compared to the original fully moss covered bark. resolution is quite good for regular parts, cloak becomes blurry but without squared artefacts (because it is an upscaled antialiased version of an originally lower res texture). most noticable problems are stretched polygons (e.g. the line above the knee.) and visible symmetry on helmet and legs. none of which can be solved with a higher resolution.
you might also try to downscale the texture further, if the file size seems too high (3 meg, dds in hak looks worse for no apparent reason, so i left it as tga)
