Just fnished my insanity run on the main story! Wow what a tough fight :0, but it feels sooo rewarding when you hit the final cut scene and you sit back just like... Awwwww yeah.
Anyways I'm playing Lair of the Shadow Broker on Hardcore for achiev now. It might just be all the upgrades and what or the fact that I've been playing on insanity for so long now...
But is it just me or is insanity like a million times harder the harder than hardcore? Is insaity the steepest difficulty climb?

insanity is the most difficult setting. There are more challenging things that you can do to handicap yourself, should you desire it.
There is a user here that goes by the name Redcaesar97, who (I believe) did a trilogy run with a ME1 style vanguard. Opting not to obtain the new powers given that class in ME2 & 3 (charge, nova). He uploaded a segment of the play through. I have to admit, that kind of difficulty is WAY beyond the level of frustration I can endure. Watcing it was painful, yet I gleefully rejoced when he acomplished a goal. I can only compaire it to a sort of dark twisted self inflicted drama, that has a happy ending.
As for hardcore seeming vastly easier than insanity, I wouldn't go that far. I found it noticeably easier, but not greatly so. I would agree that it has more to do with the upgrades. like ME1, once you reach a certain point with your character and squads level and powers, the game starts to feel like it has breathing room.
Also, LoTSB isn't particularly challenging, outside of 2 or 3 particular bouts where things get...more interesting. For myself the entire game boils down to the fight in the arrival DLC and the abandoned mines. Those challenges seem to be the ones I look forward to most. They have a good pace of baddies where you can manage them, yet you can easily fall, if you start slipping up.

The abandoned mine with the bazillion husks... That creeped me out, I can't believe I completed it lol
It felt super awesome finishing it since it made me feel like a bad ass, but armored husks are certainly a pain.

Every enemy (after the prologue) have protections on Insanity, and since hp is higher, some powers at various levels and upgrades aren't sufficient to fully defense strip.
I don't really know if Hardcore->Insanity is any steeper than Veteran->Hardcore in ME2, I didn't really play it much on those difficulties.

Hardcore->Insanity is less steep than Veteran->Hardcore in ME2. This is due to having to adapt to most/all enemies gaining protections from Hardcore onwards. Once you're used to that, the transition to Insanity isn't so bad. YMMV ofc.
