Okay first off, I would rate this game 10 out of 10. The 20 hours it took me to beat it went by like nothing. I was super immersed in the story, and felt connected to all the characters.

ANYWAYS. One huge flaw is that after you beat the game, there is no "free roam" mode or whatever. There was this one quest that I wanted to do, but the fate of the galaxy was in danger so I said you know what, the main quest line is more important. Lore wise it would be silly running around doing the side quests and exploring right in the middle of the galatic apocolyps.

Game really needed a free roam mode after. Its very disapointing to find out there wasnt :(

I guess I could just "pretend" I am doing the other non essential quests after the main plot is settled, but in a game with a "Doomsday" plot and a bunch of non essential quests thats all about the lore, you need a free roam mode after you beat the last boss. Similar to all grand theft auto games.

ME2 does have a "free roam" mode after the main quest is finished. Some of the side quests in ME1 can be squeezed in for RP purposes by coming up with reasons why Shepard might do them. For instance, on Feros there is this Geth terminal you can hack that will let you know about a Geth invasion in the Armstrong Cluster. You could justify going there as a possible lead on Saren's location. You can always justify returning to the Citadel after every main quest mission by saying it is to refuel and refit. Nasana Dantius's quest can be justified because it is in the same cluster where Liara is, and you are not given and exact location for her, so just land on Nasana's planet to see if she is there. You can also do Wrex's mission and Garrus's mission as necessary for the mental well being of your crew. In other words, I am sure you can come up with RP reasons why you should be doing various side quests.

Glad they understood the problem for the 2nd game though. Its a complete RP buzzkill not being able to do all this after the main quest, oh well.

Yeah I agree, there isn't any kind of ME2 or ME3-style warning that implies that you're about to enter the point of no return (and ME3 automatically throws you back to before that point anyway!).

Your "point of no return" should be kinda obvious as soon as Liara shouts ILOS! WE NEED TO GET TO ILOS!!!! You go to Ilos to end the game and stop Saren. When I did my "completionist" playthrough, I did everything before Virmire that was NOT on the Citadel so the ending flowed properly... Getting that achievement is WORK. At least 40-50 hours of gaming. Lots of Mako too. You find out Cerberus' origins, stop a Geth Incursion and help Tali with her Pilgrimage if you choose to, You get help Wrex find armor stolen from his family during the Rebellions, help Garrus catch an evil doctor and more... You learn about the Reapers in some sidequests too, indoctrination is demonstrated.

If you care to try to do some of these missions, look them up on the Mass Effect Wikia. Pretty helpful guide they got there.
