Is this a big deal? Is it necessary to play ME1 to have the full experience of ME2?
Since I have not played ME 1...

I doubt it. There are only a few things that a save game would carry over with (death of characters and things like that). Im sure the game will brief you on the original story before you start, especially if you're not loading a saved me1 file, so there really shouldnt be anything to worry about.
If it's bothering you so much why not play me1 while waiting? It's only $10 on the EA store and you can download it right to your pc.

Depends. If you mean a full, personalized experience where you say, "hey, I punched this b..tch in the face already", then yes, you do need to play ME1.
It certainly have its benefits, it will feel more personal, you will continue your hero's story rather than start a new one.
But for enjoying ME2, getting familiar with the world, immerse in the storyline, for that, you don't necessarily need to play ME1.
However, I'd highly recommend it, you can still get it, and there's always a bargain sale somewhere on the net.

100 Decisions carry from ME1 to ME2, only 12 do not. This makes for a highly personalized experience but it is NOT necessary to play ME1 before ME2

No, they've designed the game so new fans can enjoy it as much as old fans but you should still go and get ME1 because its a brilliant game!

You should. Despite what the devs say, it just won't be the same to me if i wouldn't have played the first game. It feels like you've progressed through something, and the decisions you've made, the choices all impact what happens in ME2. I strongly suggest you get the first game.

Just missing a real fun game and the feeling that ME2 is more shaped by your decisions than the default ones.

Mass Effect is quite the experience; it's essentially "your" universe. It's going to be awesome to find that your choices actually affect your travels. It's almost like you're writing a book. I suggest picking up the first one so it'll be your own experience; if you start this week, you should have a pretty decent playthrough completed if you play 2-3 hours a day.

Nobody, quite frankly, knows every decision that affects ME2.
Dragon Age is better at this, as it actually TELLS you (a least on a base level) what you changed for later games.
If you didn't play ME1, ME2 allows you to "act" like you did and it has an in-game feature that allows you to be quizzed on "what you did". So even if you DIDN'T play ME1, the game acts like you did.
For a spoiler-filled run-down of what we DO know will carry over (simply because they are too obvious not to), I direct you here:

BTW how long should it take to complete? 30-50 hours?

you need mass effect 1 to fully get an understanding of how awesome mass effect 1 is.

About 15 if you don't do any sidequests. Maybe 20-30 if you do all of them.

Hus: I got to around level 48 in 20 hours, and I had beat all of the main quests in 17. It is a very short RPG. It is on Steam for $20.
Dub: ME1 was actually a let down for me. ME2 looks and sounds like what ME1 should of (and PR'ed itself) of been.

If you wanna explore everything, tinker with equipment, always change to the best ones, then it's about 60 hours.
If you just go through the game, do the sidequests (but ignore the sometimes rather annoying collection quests), then it's 30 for the first time.
But if you don't stand around to admire the view and that kind of stuff, you can finish it in 25 with no problem.

It's nowhere near 60. I'm sorry, but I keep hearing people say that, and it is nowhere near 60 hours.

I buy all my games from Steam because it's just too convenient not to.
