Oh yeah, 20-30 hours if you do everything. Don't know where people get 60 from. I'd actually say 10-15 if you only do main quest. Anyways, good luck.

My husband started ME and didn't care for it. He's been watching the ME2 information and thinks he might like it. He'll start at ME2 and probably be satisfied.

I, however, have been playing ME for 2 years, have a number of Sheps to bring into ME2 and am very very glad I played the 1st one.

It's all about choices. ME isn't that expensive now so if you want the whole trilogy experience, then get the 1st one.

ME1 will never reach 60 hours, unless your just letting it run or something. About 40 tops.

ME1 honestly surprised me by how short it was. For a BioWare game.

Greg Zeschuk said in his interview on kotaku.com, that you actually won't "miss" anything, if you haven't played ME1, since you just don't recall, that there could be something other, than it is. If you do have played ME1 however, you'll occasionally stumble upon things, that are actually outcomes of decisions you made in ME1. He also noted, that you maybe have to play the game twice, one time with, one time without import, to notice all the actual differences your choices made, as some are more apparent, and some are more subtle.
He also stated that somewhat any of the NPC that appeared in ME1 may reappear in ME2, if they haven't died ore otherwise been taken out of the world.

Link to the Interview.

It's can be somewhere near 60. I'm sorry, but I didn't say it as a marketing line, and I don't know why you assume I was saying it out of boredom or anything.
Let me elaborate: If you stand down, tinker with your equipment, stay in the wards just to see the view of the Citadel and the Nebula, that kind of stuff, you can easily spend 60 hours with it. Actually, my first playthrough was somewhere around 56 hours, that's why I used that number.
But I also have to admit, that I usually smoke outdoors and -since the counter doesn't stop when you go to the menu- it could mean about 5-6 hours. :)

Is this a big deal? Is it necessary to play ME1 to have the full experience of ME2?

ME1's main quest:

* Eden Prime

* Citadel, Pt. I

* Feros

* Noveria

* Virmire

* Citadel, Pt. II

* Illos

* Citadel, Pt. III

ME2's main quest:

* [Cerberus?]

* Freedom's Progress

* Find Subject Zero

* Find Samara

* Find Mordus

* Find Grunt

* Find Thane

* Find Tali

* Find ... that other team member

* I'm sure there will be LOADS to do after you assemble your group, or at least one or two more missions

* [Collector space?]

No, it is not a big deal.

I do think people who have played Mass Effect 1 will get more out of Mass Effect 2 (story and context, etc) but ME2 stands alone as an excellent story and game whether you played the first or not. :)

Because everyone plays exactly the way you play. Because everyone has exactly the same level of skill you do. Because everyone is you. I'm sorry, but that is just a very stupid thing to say, you must have a pathetic frame of reference.

I clock in around 40 doing EVEHRUYTHANG on Insantiy. It takes around 60 to 70 to hit level 60*. (not skipping dialog)

*Including Level-cap Limbo. When you hit Lv.50 and can't go any higher until you beat the game once (Not likely to happen unless you get a new 360, or lose your saves.)

My "Optimal" Save, of Total, 100% Completion, Level60 (2 complete playthroughs) the Timestamp is H81M12
Since I didn't skip any Dialog, and even walked away with game running (And fell asleep once) That's a good "It'll take AT WORST" high water mark.

I think my longest single playthrough was 54hours on Insanity, but that also includes a good heap of AFK time, when I just plain up didn't pause the game. However, if you aren't particularly skilled at Mass Effect, it could crank out to 60hours with death times, I don't think the deaths will be counted on the total timestamp you see though. I mean, it really only takes 1 charging Krogan on a UNC to add an hour to you play time.

MainQ Skipping Dialog, 8hours
MainQ All Dialog: 13Hours
Full Playthrough1, No Dialog: 30hours.
Full Playthrough, All Dialog: 36 Hours.
All Content, No Dialog (Lv.60ect) 55hours
All Content, All Dialog (Lv.60ect) 68hours.

I think those are reasonable estimates.

Of course nobody plays the way I do. Or you do. But be serious for a minute, and stop trying to get into an argument because it's a forum.

I'm as serious as cancer. An argument implies one side has a leg to stand on. I just wanted to make it very clear to the poor people you're misleading that there's more details than "I DID IT LOL".

I skipped all dialogue but did every single quest at 25 hours and ended at level 54.

Don't listen to Mr. Priestly - You NEED to get it. Mass Effect is a great story, support Bioware and go get yourself a copy!

I'd also recommend the books. They're light reads - but very enjoyable.

---

Then, you will be ready for the awsome that will be Mass Effect 2.

I mean, it's a freak'n trilogy. Would you watch Lord of the Rings or Star Wars out of order - or, skip one entirely?

No, it probably won't make too big a difference. Having said that though, I started playing KOTOR II before KOTOR I. I realized somewhere into it (after hearing all of the Revan references) that storywise I missed something. Do yourself a favor and play ME1 now.

I agree totally, my first playthrough was 35-40 hours and that was doing every single tiny side quest.  I just finished my import Shep (started a new game+ with my level 60 soldier) and it took me about 15 hours and that was with every side quest completed.  It's very short for an RPG and once you know your way around very very short.

I really don't see where people can find those additional 20 hours. :blush:

 The thing is that you'll miss out on some things that those who have played ME1 will know all about such as:

 Refund Guy - will he get his refund finally!!

 Morlan - will he actually have many good supplies

 Elevators - I mean we suffered through them so why not join the ME1 Elevator club.

 Conrad Verner - hmmmmm rabid fan who has your autograph and picture

 The Mako - see how many times you can get it stuck on mountains.

 Enemies everywhere - oh god yet again

 Thresher Maws - yup your vehicle can survive a fall from a mountaintop but one of these babies can destroy it in an instant.
 And so much else....
