Let's talk microtransactions

But I played the heck out of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, and now that it is not longer supported with new content, I'd love to have another go-round with something else. As long as it's co-op.
The thing is... I didn't really pay for it. I bought a couple of packs at first because they were new to me but quickly decided randomized loot wasn't for me. You bought loot packs that would grant (or if you already had it, upgrade) a random character or weapon. I know slot machines make all the money, I'll just never, ever use them.
Secondly -- and I think this might interest you, Bioware/EA -- spending money would actually take fun out of the game. There was nothing I could buy for Bioware Points that I couldn't also buy with the space cash I earned by playing. That meant buying made me feel like I was cheating. If I bought it, I wasn't earning it.
So maybe this time, just maybe, you could sell something I might want to buy?
What have I bought in online games? Plenty. I've spend hundreds of dollars, maybe more than a thousand. I buy things like feature unlocks or access to premium content. I buy colors and other visual customization options. But all these things have to be permanent -- if I feel nickel-and-dimed, I get queasy and don't want to start down that road.
So... what have you paid for in the past, and what have you vowed to never pay for?

I love being able to buy extra stuff. I bought all the DLCs for DA games and would happily pay for the ability to buy in-game gold.
Oddly enough I spend most of my in game gold on my companions. I always buy Merrill Final Thought for example (besides being a killer staff it matches her armour colour wise ;-). But things are so expensive I am so limted. I would love to get Isabela the Puzzle Ring in act two and the Four-Fingered Eddie's Lucky Talisman in Act 3 but there is no where near enough gold to earn. There is a Barden's Folly ring I want to give to Aveline as well. So I would gladly pay for more gold. As far as earning it. Hell we saved Kirkwall from the Qunari and get what like 5 gold for it? WTH? We have earned way, way more gold and then some.

Of course, I'd rather see it for getting certain NPC skins and what not.

Putting prices on purely optional sidequests could get a bunch of money, you know.

They'd get my money, or some more of it, anyway. Having the Chanters board be a place to spend real money to get side quests which provide xp, content and loot seems like a good option (at least for someone like me that despises multiplayer and everything that it stands for). If that would satisfy mr gibeau I'd take it in a heartbeat.

Wouldn't that be a great way to give people choices? Those that want it can buy it and those that do not don't have to.
I bet it would sell. Make an NPC that people rage about into a romance option, and you've got yourself some more cash.
Like other dwarf romances for example, one could make them all DLC.

That is a frighteningly good idea. I can hear the cash registers ringing at EA now. Great idea.

Are you... cheering... for being ripped off? You should be up in arms over microtransactions in SIXTY BUCKS games. It's in your best interest as a consumer to be against this.
Anyone who thinks microtransactions in a game they already bought and paid for is an idiot.
I realise this game will most likely have microtransactions, but I will never be ok with this, and it will certainly factor in to whether or not I'll buy this game. And I urge everyone here to make their own assessment. Seriously start looking out for your own self interest, or soon, your favourite games might not be completable or enjoyable without investing another hidden sixty bucks on top of the retail price.

Well...almost anything. 'Pay to win' is a line I will not forgive being crossed, but other than that...

Why stop there? Why not add several Qunari romances as DLC too? Complete with Qun conversions, helmets, stuff to bite down on, and more!
Add blood mage romances, templar romances, elf romances, more human romances.
Honestly, romance is a highly desired part in Bioware games. They could totally capitalize on their quality of writing being what it is. People would shell out lots of cash.

If additional was the operative term, then sure. More content, whatever form it might take, costs more to make, so it is reasonable to ask the customer to pay more. Anything to keep multiplayer away.

Additional is what I meant. If the game didn't have romancesof its own to an already considerable extent, I assure you the game would suffer terribly due to disapproval from fans.
These side stories really help to immerse fans in Bioware games. They're like flavor to the whole thing that makes the player more than apathetic.

If you buy a $60000 car, do you
think you can require the dealer to put a roof rack and spoiler on for
free? The price of the base product is irrelevant to the question of
optional paid extras.
This is precisely what I mean.
With paid DLC in small romance packages, you can make your game the way you want it to be.

The thing about romances is, not everyone cares for them BUT there is a huge subset of people who play because of the romance and social options and you can bet your arse many of them would be willing to pay good money to have romance options or even more indepth romance options.
Just look at how much money was made on games like the Sims so people could buy better clothes and nicer houses and stuff like that (which are all social optons). I know DA is not a "social game" but let me tell ya if they find that magic button where they could stay true to DA and yet pull in the "social Sim crowds" as an opt in paid option, WOWZERS...BIG MONEY francise.

I don't tend to like big stuff being DLC (like companions...Sebastian...Shale) very much. On the OTHER hand, I like feeling like I"m paying for something meaty.
They have to lock stuff down before shipping even if they're still working on the add-on content, so I don't agree with the rationale that DLC of any kind is just a money-grab. Day-One DLC makes me feel a little funny, but still.
I think the beauty of DLC is that the consumer can pick what to get. For instance, I only play mages so I was able to get the Mage Item packs for pretty darn cheap and ignore the rest. I got Legacy because I was intrigued (and it was SO worth it). They made extra content, so I gave them extra money, and it didn't feel like the base game was MISSING anything, really (although I kinda wish the Black Emporium had been included in the base game).

Huh? Don't you mean, buying a girl at the pearl? Otherwise, they'd be paying you...DragonKingReborn wrote...
One minor thing, though, if we have romances available as micro transactions, it will feel a bit like walking into the pearl, but having to work for it.
And you'd be sore in the morning.
