You've never heard of Persona?

I would still get the game and enjoy it but I'd feel it would be improved by bringing the romances back.

I enjoy them. It allows another way to define my character and express personality - who does my PC feel attracted to, both as friends and potential LIs.

I'd probably be encouraged to buy DAI if romances were cut.

Yes.

I enjoy romances, but they're hardly the only good thing about the games. At least for me, that is.

Bioware without romances is like Bethesda without bugs.

Are you saying Persona is bad, or something about suicide?

Tbh, Persona's the only thing that's caught my attention in awhile.

My negligible interest would skyrocket but I'd have to wait and see still.

A question for some older folks: How common were romances in old-school RPGs?

So you would be more interested in the game solely based on the idea that a completely optional part of the game that you weren't going to access anyway is removed, even though other people would prefer it?  It's not like this imaginary scenario stated that anything extra would be added in place with the "romance resources".

I get it that romancers can be fanatic, but the anti-romance people can be just contrary, spiteful geysers of negativity sometimes.

Honestly I've never played Persona, so I don't know. :D

But the other thing still stands.

As I said, it's the only thing that I've really invested time into in awhile. It's pretty great.

I don't really have a response for the other thing though. So... uh... Hi?

Define old-school RPGs.  10 years?  20?

Anything released before the original Xbox. So...older than twelve years ago? 2002 and before?

Are you trying to make a point with this question or are you legitmately asking?  Seems a pretty general question given the hundreds of RPGs that were released before XBox.

I'd be interested because that means BioWare would be bold.

But how long after they cut romances would it take for people to start complaining about "being forced" to have relationships with friends/rivals? You never actually have to do either, but it's seems like people feel that the resources devoted to relationships should be devoted to cutting the heads off of things.

From what I saw in the (endless) debate about romances, most don't complain about being 'forced' to do romances. But I wasn't debating if it was right or wrong to cut romances. I responded to the part about 'full of people we don't care about' in your post. Cutting off romances wouldn't mean that there'll no be NPC we can care about.

Fair enough. And you're right, if there were no LIs I would still care about the others. I suppose all I was saying was that I've played too many other RPGs to want to see Bioware take even a small step in that direction.

There have been a fair amount of demands and requests for modern BioWare games based on what older games were like. So yes, if older games handled romance radically differently, that would be a clue as to where this attitude might be stemming from.

Romances in Western RPGs were virtually non-existent before the Infinity Engine games, specifically Baldur's Gate 2 which popularised the idea.

Bringing 'choose-your-own-bond-girl/guy' romance into the RPG genre and into the forefront of mainstream RPG design is probably BioWare's single biggest achievement as a company. Whether that's a good thing or a bad thing is up to individuals. I have my own opinions on it, but they are fairly apparent.

Plenty of romance (or hints at it) in JRPGs, but it's not done in the same format that Western RPGs have them in.

I would say that the format of romance in BG 2 isn't all that different to say, DA 2. But there is a massive difference in presentation. In BG 2 it was a semi-hidden element that ran concurrently with companion questlines and required specific non-hinted answers at particular junction points to continue the romance; getting the majority of pay-off in the epilogue slides. The sheer amount of interesting non-romance content also helped to emphasise it was just a small part of the game.

Also, the lack of badly animated sex scenes made them feel less fanservice-y.

Huh. There was a time when I thought adding elements that other developers were ignoring was bold.

Now removing elements and becoming like everybody else is bold.

Interesting. :alien:

Fine by me, i couldn't care a sh!t about romances in games but i think "would still purchase" is wrong to put it for me because i would still not be interested in the game even with it cut out, DA games just isn't fun to play same goes for ME.
