I was thinking that you only watched the movie and fell asleep half way through the intro sequence and title screen, but now I don't think you even did that.David7204 wrote...
I'll tell you right now that 'purpose' or no, it doesn't come through very strongly considering it was accidental on his part.
Why don't you explain what you think his purpose is?

Most stories make it clear the protagonists are facing a difficult challenge. Mass Effect took it far, far further than Lord of the Rings ever did. Two games, dozens of hours building up how powerful they are. It's not on the same level at all.
As a side note, the ending to the Lord of the Rings would be a lot better without Gollum doing his thing.

I made that comment 40 minutes ago now. I'd be nice to get a proper response instead of the very tedious feigned outrage.
Why bother? Nothing is going to change your mind. You're absolutely convinced that you're infallibly right. There's no point trying to argue with you David. It just leads to an 'Elves are always superior' match. You won't listen to reason or logic, you dismiss evidence that goes against you while using uncredible and malleable sources, and you do nothing but insult others while putting yourself and your opinion on a pedestal? Is there any reason your opinions should be taken with any less than a full can of Morton's Salt poured on top of it?

David didn't remember that there was a black hole by the collector base in ME2, it's clear that paying attention isn't his strong point.

I see no point. You ignore everything people say to you, unlike say massive who at least listens and thus I have no issue debating aspects with him even if we sometimes get carried away, you don't listen at all and pick and choose. You outright ignore facts, you beleive you're pov and opinion is law and refuse to consider anything else. There's no point arguing with you on anything let alone LotR.David7204 wrote...

I doubt he's read the novels.
Granted, anyone who read the Silmarillion has my respect. That was a hard read.

So yes, it would have been far better if Frodo had actually confronted and overcome the corruption of the Ring. You know, to validate, as I said, the whole point of giving the Ring to a hobbit. That being that the simple Hobbit possesses a power kings and warriors don't.

If Gollum's 'purpose' was redemption, it was a failure. He died as corrupted as ever. If it was 'the world is random and crap happens for no reason'...well...same thing.

His purpose wasn't redemption. His purpose was to destroy the ring. It didn't have a morality lesson imbued with it.
Gollum's greed is what saved Middle Earth. Meanwhile, the heroism was nothing more than a distraction to buy as much time as possible for the greedy one to save the day through the power of greed.
I think I've found the source of David's dismissal of LotR. Heroism didn't save the day. Corruption did.

You do know Frodo did in fact do that aftert he ring was destroyed? Do you know why Frodo went on the ship? Because his mind and body had to heal. The Ring was far more dangerous then the Reapers ever where, by far and the fact that Frodo did fall shows this. Read the books.David7204 wrote...

Also as peopel have said it was because of his greed, it was corruption that ended up saving everyone, not heroism or a knight in shining armor. It was a person who had suffered the most from the ring and was corrupted to the point of no return that destroyed the ring. Of course you will say that's stupid because in the end, it was a corrupt being that saved everyone.

That kind of iterates my point.
Gollum's lust and greed succeeded where Frodo's virtue failed.
That said, if Sauron got the ring back, the only option left for Middle Earth would pretty much be for the Valar to smite it once all the elves left.
And still, all that trouble could have been averted if they just used the eagles... or let Boromir have his catapult.
