Some nights ago I got out of the Deep Roads and I was shocked Bethany had to die. I read something around and I understood I could somehow save her by bringing along Anders.

How did you feel about this episode? Personally I hated the idea of losing such a sweet companion.
Just curious!!

If you take Anders you meet up with a Grey Warden who Anders persuades to accept Bethany as a (potential) Warden, thus "curing" her blood taint.

I've never not taken Anders so haven't seen her death (in that way).

Bioware spend a lot of time killing off your family in most games so I wasn't surprised.

At this time my main concern is remembering to remove their good gear first.

Same thing happened on my first play through. It was disappointing. Not sure if there was any real clue that would happen, other than Mother's vague predictions.

The only way she dies is (1) you bring her and (2) you don't bring Anders. So you can leave her at home, and she lives; but she's not available for most of the rest of the game. There's a chance for a family reunion near the end. If she becomes a Warden, that opportunity is lost.

No, she still shows up at the end if a warden, and you can put her in your group for the final battle sequences. She also appears when the wardens show up during the Qunari incident at the end of Act 2 with either Stroud or Alistair (if he is still in the wardens).  Or if you have Nathaniel still alive and do his sister's quest, she is one of the GW's accompanying him to the deep roads on his mission there, and you encounter her at the end (though again, she doesn't join you).

As a Circle mage she also appears during the final fights of Act 2 though you can't get her to join you, and at the end of Act 3 she will join your group after you reach the Gallows (if you choose to have her). Unsure if you can convince her to immediately after Anders pulls his stunt.

And of course, if she's alive during the Adventure DLC's you can also choose to have her 'on a leave of absence' from wherever she is (Circle or Wardens) and she will join you for the DLC's duration as well.

uhm.. from what you're saying I would have been better letting her go to the Circle, so that I could spend more time with her in the game. Doh!

There isn't much of a difference time-wise between warden-Bethany and circle-Bethany. Her personality is quite different, but you hardly see her either way (apart from DLCs).

It's about the same amount of time, in fact, if you do Nathaniel's quest, you actually see Warden Bethany an additional time than the Circle. And yea, she seems a bit happier as a Circle Mage than a Warden, though neither fate makes her seem happy.  I've only made her a warden a few times.

I'm curious about something and this thread seems like as good a place to ask as any.

If Bethany goes to the Circle and you try to refuse helping Meredith during On the Loose (Act 3), the Knight-Commander makes some veiled threats against your sister. But what does she say if Bethany is a Warden? Is it the same dialogue, or does she mention another member of your party?

This seemed pretty random and arbitrary to me. You don't loose the sibling in the Deep Roads because you made a mistake or a bad decision, you lose them because you didn't bring Anders with you? That doesn't really seem fair to me, especially since nobody else is vulnerable to the Taint at any point in the game. It's jarring the first time around, but afterward it's just a minor annoyance that you have to deal with to get the outcome you want.

I seem to recall she just brings up the "you're the Champion" bit, trying to 'guilt trip' you into doing it.  If Bethany is a warden I am unsure if Meredith even knows about her, since they've had no reason to have ever met.  But it has been a while since I've played.  I could be remembering it wrong.

Dunno, I think it was hardly unfair - I mean, are you really not going to bring a Grey Warden (and a Healer) into the Deep Roads?

(Then again, the first time I left Bethany at home because I thought that someone had to take care of Leandra and even left spare money. I was sure the game was hinting at something bad.)

I still think that circle!Bethany is the best, anyway *shrugs* She sounds really bitter and is really no fun as a Warden.

I think Bethany ends up happy either way, but she's happy all the time as a Circle mage, and only happy toward the end of the game as a Warden. She eventually realizes that being a Warden gives her freedom and the opportunity to do good, but until then she resents you for making her one. If she's in the Circle, she comes to enjoy being there pretty quickly, and doesn't blame you for leaving her behind. Also if she's in the Circle, then when you rescue that mage girl as part of Anders storyline, and you tell her to go back to the circle, she mentions Bethany, and it kind've feels like you're playing matchmaker for Bethany, which is nice. It keeps Bethany from being alone in the Circle until you come rescue her and the other mages at the end. So the Circle is probably the 'better' way to go for Bethany, but I don't think making her a Warden is a 'bad' choice, just less good overall. Definitely worth playing it both ways to see how it all plays out and judge for yourself which way you think is best for her.

Fact is that I really liked the interaction between Hawke and his sister in the first part of the game. I felt it was a great pair of personages to go through the whole game. I can't understand why there's no choice to do so..

You don't need a healer at any point in the game, on any difficulty if you know what you're doing... I can only assume that you either love Anders as a character and can't understand why anyone would not want to travel with him, or you have no understanding of how to play using unconventional party combinations.  It's probably both, based on your response.  Aside from sensing darkspawn and immunity to the Taint, Grey Wardens have no special abilities that would make any difference on this mission.  Since Anders didn't prevent you from running into multiple darkspawn ambushes or protect anybody from getting Tainted, I guess that means he isn't such an obviously great choice.  Try using your imagination once in a while...

It's sort of a metagaming thing, but I knew something was going to happen to Bethany as soon as Leandra pleaded to leave her behind, so I did. In the end, I very much prefer Circle Bethany to Warden Bethany, since she's not cursed with darkspawn taint and won't be doomed to live only 30 years more (on average). That said, I wonder if BioWare retcon'd the shortened lifespan. Flemeth's comments in the prologue seem to be a pretty major change to what we knew in Origins. Either way, I'd rather she not be plagued by nightmares of archdemons, or I suppose even hear the calling from the remaining Old Gods. Also, with her in the Circle, it did give even more incentive for me to side with the mages. I'd kill every Templar in Thedas before I let them go through with the right of annulment .
