All 3 choices are rubbish btw, I thought we discussed this BSN?

If we stopped talking about things that the BSN considers "rubbish", we wouldn't have very much to discuss.

Hell, the entirety of ME2's plot wouldn't get discussed.

Looking at where this thread is headed, the subject matter does qualify for that irregardless of whichever consensus there may be here, though. And is worth about just as much.

Oh come on. Nothing wrong with discussing high-level philosophy and metafysics in a game thread, is there? ;)

I believe bioware simply didn't think the ending through. however, we really don't know what specifically happens after each ending, or al least we don't have enough information to make any judgment call about which outcome is best or just better. as for the writers belief of what the desired outcome is, synthesis only becomes an option at higher ems levels. that should mean something, right?

I think the high EMS Destroy ending gives a pretty detailed version of what happens. Civilizations rebuild and flourish again, the Citadel is rebuilt, the Relays are repaired, technology gets reconstructed, and a new golden age appears for the involved civilizations. I wouldn't pass up on that for a vague promise of higher evolutionary stages.

that might just be a result of destroy being a less complex ending (not that I'm saying it is, it just might be). control & synthesis, they both seem to have more subtle implications that aren't readily apparent, even post facto.

So what happens with the synthesis ending:

  • The galaxy basically enters a golden age...

Lol, a golden age full of zombie Husks and other horrible Reaper creatures. And even more horrible is, that the people seem to accept such abominations.

I don't know about Destroy leading to a golden age. Fundamental nature of people haven't change. You still have to deal with the reality of chaos. Not just chaos of synthetics, but chaos of politics, wars, crime, economy, Krogan, rachni, or whoever. Chaos of Salarians possibly uplifting the Yahg (who, in turn, start killing Krogan). The Reapers are the ones who seek order and less complexity. They want a predictable universe. That's what the cycles have been this whole time. Guiding development with mass relays and automating harvests. A perfect lttle system. But life isn't about perfect systems.

I certainly feel Synthesis was supposed to be the general paragon solution. In reality it fits the extreme paragon that craves after being a god and converting all life to his/her ideal.

To be honest, even though I completely oppose the Synthesis option, I don't think that husks and similar Reaper creatures are actually the "form of higher evolution" the Intelligence/Catalyst is talking about. Reapers are ultimately just a tool in the hands of the Intelligence.

That being said, give me Destroy any day.

If a future game takes a synthesis canon the asari dancers in the clubs will be interesting.

Wow, someone is living in a completely black and white world. I don't see any "Paragon" forcing the entire galaxy to conform to some AI who is working to find a solution for a race of arrogant cuttlefishes who want to control all life in the galaxy as if they are tools to be used.

The Brute All-Stars 2189 Team would have won the Championship if they had managed to tone down their charge on the playingfield. Sadly they never finished a game without at least half being sent off. When asked about this the head coach replied "Well ever since they became self aware we have tried to integrate them into the galactic League, but it's a steep learning curve". Smasher Humangouger, the team captain, when asked about their chances for the next season commented "By the Goddess, shoot me now so i can end this nightmare".

I do think the "Synthesis destroys individuality and/or turns everyone into husks" arguments are a little overblown. Nothing from the Synthesis ending slides leads me to think that people are no longer behaving as individuals - in fact, many of them seem to be doing the same things we see them doing in the non-Synthesis ending slides (Jack is still with her students, the krogan are still rebuilding on Tuchanka, Samara is still visiting her daughter).

I think the problem that many Paragons have with Synthesis is that it's Shepard making such a drastic choice for the entire galaxy - you don't even get to ask the Catalyst, "Wait, will people be able to turn these upgrades off if they don't want them?" You get an option to say you won't make that kind of decision but the conversation doesn't go anywhere after that.

You can argue that Synthesis ultimately violates basic rights *less* than Destroy or Control - you don't have the massive collateral damage of Destroy, and you have a more even distribution of power than in Control. But it's still deeply problematic from a Paragon perspective, IMO. For all that Renegades felt slighted in other parts of the ME trilogy, I'd argue that Paragons definitely got the short end of the stick with the endings. A heavily headcanoned Control or Synthesis is really the only way I can feel comfortable with the endings for a Paragon Shepard.

If you headcanon, that the Shepard AI destroys all Reapers after everything is rebuild, then control is paragon.

"Dear Diary. Today is another sad day. I was fired by the Hairdresser - the fourth one in a month. Mrs Athyia says it's because of complaints from the customers on how I do their hair. Apparently my style invades their personal space too much. I don't understand, I just needed to cradle their head to check that my work was up to standard. Garius at the recruitment centre says there may be an opening at a Sushi restaurant in a few weeks once they have repaired the floor. I might give that a go."

Actually, I was wrong. Synthesis would make a great setting for ME4.

On a slightly different note: anyone else noticed that in the Extended Cut, the Intelligence no longer actually says the Geth will die? I wonder if it was overlooked in the extended cut?

I think they did that to include EDI.

I think some kind of death is appropriate for Control. It's tailor made for... the disembodied sort. Lots of Gnostic undertones in both Control and Synthesis. Perfect for people who despise sex and cookies.

Sucks to that. I prefer my tyrant ladies alive and well. :P

On a more serious note, singular sacrifice being the trademark of Green alone would have helped further distinguishing between the two. There are plenty other overlaps between Blue and Green that would need sorting without that in the mix.
