Damn I recently came to conclusion Arlathan was the golden/black city, I guess this confirms I was wrong. I thought I was so clever to think of it!

The image portrayed is unlikely to be Arlathan itself.

I doubt it's Arlathan. Or at least the Arlathan of legend.
After all, the whole immortality thing sounds pretty fishy and it's also doubtfull that the
elves where really the first race in Thedas.
...Yes I'm veeery scepticel towards the claims of the Dalish =P
But in all seriousness, I really hope it is NOT Arlathan (or at least not clearly).
I rather liked the ambiguity of the lore, it seems so ..realistic and it allows
the player to have his/her own opinion about whether certain parts of the lore are
true or not. Since many races/organizations use their lore to demand/claim certain things
it would be nice if it would always stay unclear if their demand is -in lack of a better word- just.
Well, jsutm y humble opinion of course ^^

I think the elven immortality thing is related to uthenara dreamers and blood magic. Perhaps Zathriam DID uncover the secret to his ancestors past in a way. I think the elven past isn't as happy and frolic-y as they lead on.

Some time ago I came across an interesting theory on the Black City being the destroyed Arlathans counterpart in fade, like the village in the Blackmarsh was in Awakening. It might have been linked to the fade by elven dreamers who wanted to save it from the Tevinters and connect through Eluvians, but it was corrupted by either the pain and destruction Arlathan had to endure or the magisters entering. It's still not clear whether the city was golden or already black when the magisters came.
