I'm still confused. Are we talking about the real characters or just the general types they represent? Tali would definitely be too much trouble, literally speaking. But as an archetype, she kind of took over the "adorkable" label from ME1 Liara. That's real enough to make a judgement.

I mean, everyone has a Liara or Jack or Garrus in their life, right?

If we are just talking about personality types I think someone like her would be fairly normal. If we are talking about the actual characters being real, I think there would be some significant obstacles that can't be hand-waived like they are in the game. Ditto for Garrus.

I don't think Jack would be good relationship material either. She'd need a therapist more than she'd need a boyfriend. In the real world PTSD isn't cured by sex. Image IPB

Only the shallow relationship with Jack is about sex. Besides, she doesn't have PTSD. She has rage. And an abusive childhood. In real life, I can relate to that. She's one of the more realistic characters to me. I can't stand people who think they're normal and don't have problems. And if they really are normal, I hope they ****ing die. =]

Jack has PTSD. She is a rape survivor and was horrifically abused as a child, and its clear that both are not in the past for Jack. She is still traumatized by it. In the game however all of that is resolved in the final romance scene, hence the jokes about Shepard's therapy penis.

In the real world I'm sure things would be a little more complicated than that. Image IPB

What are you a doctor now? I've been abused myself. I don't have PTSD. I didn't really want to air this out, but I figure you got the message before. Whatever. Just shut the **** up. Learn how to do that. You don't know anything about the subject, so don't act like you do.

My favorite romance is my real romance.

Yep, something along these lines.

These are fictional characters and it is very obvious that they are written as mere stereotypes (typically conservative military lady; innocent but cheeky and nerdy shy girl; tender egghead with a sex-appeal etc.). To me they never felt real living-breathing characters. They are entertaining, but very cliched and two-dimensional. I can't even imagine them as real life people. More like scripted movie characters.

Plus I'm not a big fan of the romance subplots in the game. I find them pretty dull, predictable and they do not add much to the story. They are not dynamic. Fortunately it is fully optional to go with a romance subplot or not.

I think I would probably have some difficulty being together with Traynor because I am a man.

We're talking about Jack, not you. In game she's portrayed like she is still traumatized by what happened to her.

We're talking about anyone with these experiences, who you think are so troubled that they can't connect or have relationships. That they're so damaged that they're always better served by therapy instead. The last thing these people need to hear is that they can't live like anybody else. Most of them already think there's something wrong with them anyways. Or they're at fault somehow. They don't need some ignorant yokle like you telling them it's all actually true. That they are actually too damaged to be bothered with or loved. You're just a dumb kid who thinks anyone who's been raped or abused is damaged or dirty somehow, and now you want to hide behind pop psychology to make it sound credible. The best thing for people to do is stop thinking they're victims.

Han: I don't think Jack's "resolution" with Shepard means all her internal turmoil is resolved. I don't think you get it at all, if you think that's what's going on. She is a broken soul and Shepard showed understanding for her, which no one really had done before. I guess the renegade romance is different... whatever. It was one of the few romances in ME2 that had some depth to it, in the dialogues, leading up to the sex scene.

I don't think she'd be over the things she went through in real life, ever. She was conditioned as a very young child to be a murderer, to get a high from murder. She copes with that pretty darn well considering, but it's still a presence in her life and psyche. Her relationship with Shepard helps her cope, it doesn't solve all her issues, and it's never presented like that. When she does show up later, doing better in ME3, it's because she's taking care of herself.

One of my "real life friends" saw Jack during her mission, her backstory and all he could say was that she was crazy, with no regard for why.  People are like that.

Jack is still dealing with stuff, she hasn't had a chance to grow up and see it in a why that isn't through a child's eyes.  That's what her mission is about.

It's a shame people can't deal with mental health issues.  That said, they shouldn't be forced on anyone, they just need to be accepted.

More on topic, the romances in Mass Effect never inspired my interest except in occasional fleeting moments.  The ones I did were out of curiousity.  Now that I think about I only ever completed the Ash romance arc.  I would never romance her in real life.  Liara has a fair bit of what I'd be interested in, personality wise, but the way it's presented I didn't choose her in-game.

Cool post. I probably should bow out of this thread. It's touched a raw nerve. That sucks. That's not exactly what I wanted to be here for.

I agree. Good thing I never actually said that. To be absolutely clear, I was speaking *only* about Jack and the way her romance arc was portrayed. I was not speaking every rape or abuse survivor of every person who is suffering from PTSD. Got it?

I never said any of those things. You're like Don Quixote tilting at windmills right now. You're also far off the mark on a couple of those assumptions about my background by the way, as I'm neither a kid or from the country.

I'm sorry about whatever it was that happened to you, but right now you're being entirely irrational and projecting your baggage into this discussion.

My favorite romance is my IRL lover, none compare to her. She may not use biotics, but she is pretty smart, ressourcefull and i can't get enough of the smell of her skin when she is out of the shower.
No polygoned character could ever beat that.

No, I don't get it. I say it's about all of those people, because there's a general place you're coming from to even form these opinions. And I'm resigned to keep you on a sh*tlist for it now. We're not going to hug and make up and reach an "understanding". It isn't that simple, dude. But like I said, i need to bail out. Feel free to have the last word/reply. I'm done.

I think what you're saying, Han, is that you're criticising the writing and not the character.

I don't agree that the writing is off in that particular way, it seems well explained why it's stuck with her. She's had it worse than most of "those other" abuse survivors in real life. Do you mean the way her problems seemed to be SOLVED at the end of the arc? Because I don't think that's what was being shown.

With that I'll say this thread is still in dangerous territory :/

I believe Jack's arc ending is possible, its simply needs more time than the game allows... you'll have to head-canon other interviews and dialogue between your Shepard and the LI.

Tali
I love Tali's personality. She's smart, warm, and playful. I could deal with the daddy stuff, she has a lot to live up to so it's understandable. Her banter is also the best, and would keep me smiling.

Liara
While a little aloof, she is the quintessential sexy nerd. If I had a type, that would be it.

Miranda: aloof, stuck up, major superiority complex, emotionally distant, insane family situation, has problems with commitment (just read the logs in LotSB of her online dating activity). Also, a fugitive wanted by both the government and a terrorist organization.

By problems with commitment, you mean that she isn't actually interested in relationships? My reading of the dating logs was that she never had any intention of getting into a committed relationship

I always assumed it meant she was reluctant to actually go forward with it.  I assumed there was some interest on her part in relationships, otherwise she wouldn't have bothered with the extranet dating sites.

Tali: Probably the most stable of the female LIs and best candidate for an actual relationship. She's been through a lot but she has demonstrated a lot of psychological resilience in the face of the severe adversity, she's courageous, good at heart, has strong family values (despite some of her family drama) and doesn't get bent out of shape about little things at the drop of a hat. She prefers to be diplomatic, even downright gentle when she can be, but is willing and able to put boot to ass when it's appropriate.

Tali would be one of the more difficult ones IMO, in that humans and Quarians cannot eat the same food. Then there is the whole problem of smexy time potentially being fatal. To some extent they are physically incompatible.

A fair point.  I was just addressing the compatibility and emotional stability issues.  Certainly the mechanics of this relationship are probably the most complicated.

Most of the possible LIs are unstable and would not actually make good relationship material, but not all of them.

Jack: Violent, psychologically damaged. When it comes to women, I don't do fixer-uppers. I accept people as they are and don't try to change them. A woman like Jack is too messed up for a relationship to work. She would have to deal with her issues first.

The romance arc has nothing to do with changing her. Only if you play the authoritarian/bossman role does it play out like that. Even Paragon lines say towards the end "I didn't say I could fix it, but you're worth staying with anyways." The only thing that amounts to change is telling her to not let the past control her. That Shepard has problems, everyone has problems. And being crazy is no big deal either - that you have to be crazy to even be on the Normandy.

So yeah. It's a storyline for people who already roleplay crazy Shepards. Not for some do-gooder ******/social worker.

Slightly unrelated, but I'm reminded of Wrex' line in ME3 now. "I can't tell if the Normandy is a warship, or a traveling freakshow." Heh

Granted that her arc is not about changing her, but the game hand waves too many of the very real, insurmountable emotional / psychological obstacles there would be to making that relationship work.

She'd need a lot of therapy and time to change who she is before she'd be good relationship material.  Not saying she needs to be perfect or anything, but she's far too broken at the moment for it to have a realistic chance of being a healthy relationship.

I always romance Liara. I liked her since ME1 before it became clear her romance was the most romantic. She's just the type of woman I like personality-wise. She has no real flaws but perhaps being a little too driven by emotion. She's reserved, appreciative, sympathetic, polite, patient, not judgmental, and very forgiving. She's never funny and doesn't have as much to say as Garrus for example but I don't find her boring. Her melancholy attitude just makes me want to hold her.

Not really sure. I suppose I'm in the "overly obsessed Talimance" group but she'd probably get on my nerves a little if she didn't grow up a bit.

She explicitly says that she's not interested in getting to know the guys; all she wants are clean medical test results. When a guy has good tests, she gives him an address and time, then disconnects. What she's after isn't a relationship.

Kasumi, well, cause she's Japanese.

Jack for the attitude and tats.

Liara probably suits me best personality-wise, but since we're talking real life I'd have to know what she'd look like in human terms.

Tali is probably the one I'd least likely date in real life which is interesting since she's my favorite ME romance.

Think of your favorite romances throughout the series...would you be able to be with someone in real life with those characteristics and problems?

For example:

Jack. She is an awesome romance option in my opinion but to be with her in real life would be very hard on you. When she opens up to you she shows that she cares, but there are so many barriers up that it would be a very emotionall taxing and unpredictable relationship.

Tali: My favorite romance but seems to be over trusting(trusting the shadow broker and blindly trusting in the fleet to make proper use of her research). Not to mention her childhood and "daddy issues" will be something you would need to work by. May not sound like a big deal, but from experince I know that it can lead to unpredictable breakdowns and emotional "check outs"

agreed - but i could probably work with Liara (her interest in ancient cultures and loving to be alone (i am not that fond of crowds - not that i fear them, mind you) etc.), Miranda (i would not demand perfection from her, i would admire her for what she is and discount her genetic-background), Kasumi (i like her abilities, because stealing is something i find utterly facinating (probably because it is forbidden)), Tali (she is simply put cute, her insecurities and daddy-issues do not bother me (i have some "momy-issues"...as my mother is a lying, stealing tramp...i am so glad i grew up with my father!) and her intelligence and love for all things technical is a plus, too) and of course i could probably deal with Kelly (who can not? - she is sweet, she would love to analyse my problems and failures etc. ^^)

there are of course the characters i can not even imagine to be with (males for instance - totally straight guy here) like ashley (xenophobia? - not my thing), morinth (don't want to die, sorry girly ^^) etc.

question is:

would we - as most of us are not all that remarkable (in the case that only a very few on this board are probably VIP (either because of money or high office (political and federal) or have a high rank in the military or are part of the special forces or a spy-agency) - be able to attract those females in the first place?

remember: we do not have prothean knowledge stuck in our heads (so Liara is not curious in the first place), Miranda only respects competition (she tells shep that he is as good or better then her, without her many advantages!), Kasumi has a thing for black guys (and i would think is not drawn to your everyday joe), then we can not give things to Tali or help her people (so how would we interest her?)....

very good question ;)

greetings LAX

Dear LAX, I believe you are confusing Racism/Xenophobia with Political Distrust;

Ashley's distrust of Garrus bears more resemblance to the distrust most Americans and most citizens of the British Commonwealth had for the Russians and Chinese during the Cold War.

Plus, would you trust a Mercenary, (regardless of his kind) who told you to your face that he would kill you if someone paid him the right price?

Plus, I don't recall Ashley having any hostility towards Tali at all, and was rather friendly to her in the elevators.
