I've only pre-ordered once, probably won't now. As far as reviews go, I try to read the middle of the road user reviews or search for the lower score 'professional' reviews.

I have no regrets about getting the season passes for TWD and Wolf among us, I greatly enjoyed the first episodes of each.

I pre-ordered once (Mass Effect 3) and bought a game the day it came out once (Saint's Row the Third.)

I won't do either of those things ever again. Nor will I buy Collector's Editions or any of that.

A good game is worth getting, and I'm happy to wait until enough time has passed that the real reviews come out. I've realized that the vast majority of early game reviews are written on the basis of playing the game for an hour or so. Often using only a beta or a demo.

I usually wait until at least the first price drop. I did pre-order ME3, but it came with Battlefield 3, so it was like buying two games for $30 each. It's very uncommon for me to pay more than $20 for a game these days.

I am probably worse now when it comes to wise game purchases thanks to Kickstarter and Steam sales.

I buy games after seeing gameplay, been like that ever since I was properly into gaming.

So I guess I did.

I gladly throw away my money to F2P, Kickstarter, Steam sales, etc. However, I've yet to impulse buy anything since Mass Effect 3's pre-release crushed any hopes I had for it.

Definitely.

Ever since about 2007, I've preferred to either rent my games to blow through them, or YouTube the important bits instead. Steam Sales and GoG sales don't tempt me unless the games are highly in my interest and mind-bogglingly low in price. The last retail brick-and-mortar game I bought was probably Mass Effect 3, though I've been fairly active with GoG/Steam.

As far as publisher game reviews, it can only gives you a shorthand concept of its quality and how it may appeal to you. There are always cases like Alpha Protocol or what-have-you that are panned by quite a few critics, but a great deal of the fans loved it. On the flip side, I've trusted reviewers with high reviews when I bought a new PC for Crysis and Spore, both of which dissapointed me.

I prefer to go by gamer instinct. I can see far enough via previews to get a good idea of where it's going and whether it's relevant to my interests.

I've bought so many gog and steam sale games that I still haven't played. Those things are my ultimate impulse buys.

A great deal. I'm far more cautious and much less likely to "bet" on a game being good than before. Scaled down on pre-ordering to almost non-existant and generally taught myself that it's not that awful to wait 2-3 days extra just in case

After decades of buying/playing games, I'm happy to say I have only one I consider a waste of money, and I only paid $2 for it on a Steam sale. No big deal.

Used to be able to obtain free demos to play, and that helped me a lot with making a buying decision. Now I can look for live streams of games I'm interested in to see how the gameplay looks, and ask questions of the person playing it. That usually helps me make up my mind.

Only planning to pre-order Witcher 3 at this point.

Yes, I've wisened up. Pre-ordering only indies from studios I know made great games. Or from a bigger dev or franchise I'd trust - tho at the moment I can't think of one.

Edit: Oh, thought of one. Imma gonna pre-order The Witcher 3, of course.

Most games I've given up on pre-ordering now, I've been stung far too many times. I'll trust CDPR and pre-order The Witcher 3 as I know if it's broken then they will do everything they can to fix it. I'll probably pre-order the MGS games, as even when Kojima has gotten it wrong before it's still be entertaining and I'll pre-order Halo 5 or whatever it is because I'm willing to give 343i a chance.

Other than that I won't be pre-ordering, especially if it's an EA game. BF4 was an utter disaster.

I've only been burned once by a pre-order, because I had faith that Konami wasn't going to continue to grind my favorite game franchise further into the dirt.

I've been disappointed a further few times, but not so much that it sours me on pre-ordering in general.

I currently have Dark Souls 2 and South Park: The Stick of Truth preordered. I doubt those are misses, unless South Park never actually comes out.

Regarding reviews, I really don't care about them, I only really care if a game has 1s and 2s across the board, then you know something's really wrong. I've loved games that have been rated 3-4, I've hated games that have been rated 8-9. Bugs and glitches haven't really been an issue for me, Skyrim and New Vegas had their off days, but I still loved them both to bits.

To this day, the only game I wanted and haven't purchased due to poor reviews is the newest Alone in the Dark. I saw it at Gamestop for like 5 bucks and was considering picking it up, but I ended up buying something else.

I like to think I'm a savvy consumer when it comes to purchasing my videogames these days in that I have a pretty good handle on the kind of games and developers I want to support with my money. Long gone are the days where I pick up a game at launch on a whim.

I believe the last time I pre-ordered AND paid full price for a game was for Call of Duty: Black Ops. I didn't mind, since it was the third Call of Duty game I ended up getting out of the four I currently have (the others being Modern Warfare 2 Hardened Edition, Call of Duty Classic (which was part of the MW2 HE), and Black Ops II).

I usually get great games for great prices, but the one thing I HATED was that Capcom ended up making Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I paid $10 for it ON TOP of the $60 I paid for the original version. It was good that I didn't pay the full $40 for the re-release, but having a re-release happen did disappoint me.

I don't pre-order often, but I do plan on pre-ordering the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix soon. I got a gift card from my aunt and uncle, so I plan on using that.

I wisened up on purchasing games ever since the failure known as Kingdom Hearts 2. I bought it the 2nd or 3rd day it came out and couldn't believe what I spent $50 on. The dlc prices is what I'm trying to break down right now. Although I have a plan, it is just so hard for me to give developers and publishers extra cash for content that should've been in the game from day 1. It's not fair that the games get cheaper but the dlc prices don't.

I would too, but the rental stores that I used to go to are all gone now, sadly.

Or do you still like to throw your money away on pre-orders, trusting the "paid" reviews that will swoon over a game (never mentioning the flaws, or just dedicate a tiny paragraph to it)?

After being kicked in the balls way too many times I've wisened up for sure and I've learned to be very patient. Even companies you think are the good guys have turned out to be just greedy bastards.

lol guess not?

I always research thoroughly any game I'm going to buy.

I may impulse buy on Steam if the games are like $10.

$60 titles I do a lot of research on before I buy. Demos, fan reviews, paid reviews, etc.

PS+ from PlayStation is a great value. Free games this month include Bioshock Infinite, Uncharted 3,  Borderlands 2, as well as games for PS4 and portable devices. Even though I don't have a ps4 yet I can purchase the games for free with my account on the internet and download them at a later date. You also get good discounts as well.
