First time in the forum, just came here because this is something major I will be suggesting.

All games, due to the technology, animation, engine or whatever used, lack emotional facial expressions, although the characters try to do it most of the time the emotion is described more through the voice actor than the actual response of the character's face, that is very limited. For example, I haven't seen any character really smile in any mass effect game, and that is one of the most basic emotional responses in existence.

When a story is about an emotional journey like Mass Effect, where bonds are made between characters over time and situations, the emotions should show in both voice and body language. Since body animations are not a problem, but facial responses are indeed difficult, and great part of human interaction and information in reality comes from someone's facial expressions, then:

I will be suggesting that in the next installment, for a better, deeper experience, Bioware to use a technology suited best for facial expressions, for example like L.A. Noire, using facial recognition animations from live actors.

Not only will make a much more incredible experience, but will also give place to a new type of dialog, the kind where information between characters is exchanged without making a single sound, just pure emotion.

So much more can be achieved by plainly imitating real people.

This would indeed make a much stronger bond between the player and the game, causing much more attachment, making the franchise even more suited to today's technology, attracting new players, and leaving perhaps some emotional traumas, making the franchise even more desirable and turning those players into walking advertisements for unsuspecting future new players, who could in fact then be attracted by the 3 games they didn't play ;)

Obviously, all these animations will be just used in cutscenes, no need for them outside of that.

PS: I don't know the extent of gigabytes this could take, and if it's a problem, animations could be just divided into groups, like this: smile, frown, anger, etc...and use the same for all. But i'm not an expert and here I'm theorycrafting.

I hope this gets read by the staff and discussed, I don't think it's a bad suggestion, what do you people think?

I suggest you play more expressive games such as A Crack in Time or Jak and Daxter.

The issue that Bioware faced (pun not intended) is that almost all of their human characters are built using a similar template. As a result, a smile value of 20 will appear differently on Hackett than it will on Al-Jilani. Given the sheer amount of facial animation needed for a game like Mass Effect, there isn't the time or manpower to really custom-animate all of the faces for every conceivable situation you can have with a character.

This very problem is why a lot of games in a similar genre will resort to text windows as opposed to fully voiced and animated scenes. But you can bet your blunderbuss' that Bioware will be looking to improve the facial animation system for the next ME game, just as they did for 2 and 3.
