Mages are notoriously poor cooks. Do we want a society ruled by people who force us all to eat only Ramen and Kraft dinner?

So they eat like a college freshman?

Hey now! I can cook a multiple course meal in my dorm!!

Course 1 plain Ramen
Course 2 Ramen with crackers
Course 3 Ramen and broccoli
Course 4 Ramen and cheese cubes.

Watch it, buster! And for the record, I hate ramen. Tis for peasants!

If we were talking about, say, The Elder Scrolls, I'd give my full support. TES mages have virtually no downside. But DA mages can be possessed by demons and things like that. I don't think mages should be forbidden from holding seats of power, but I'd rather not run the risk of a bunch of demons ruling Thedas.

Mages do rule in TES, because everyone can use magic.

If they were so great, they'd already be ruling the world.

They did, for a while, remember. The chantry has to kidnap them as children to prevent this from happening again.

Except, not realy, because the full extent of Thedas is less than a continent, based on the maps. There's got to be more to their world, else Thedas is scaled like Pluto.

Shhh, you'll hurt the Dwarve's feelings.

Not just kill, CREATE too.  They have the power to raise and lower mountains, to turn sand into glass with their minds, to reshape the earth with their power.  They should rule as mortal demigods.

They don't, at least not alone. They can do massive feats together, with the use of great quantity of lyrium and/or sacrifices.
Mages are pretty powerful, but with their personal strenght alone they're far from being as powerful as you said.

Can mages kill a Yak from 200 yards away with mind bullets? Cause that would be impressive. I might actually consider voting them into office.

They did. It was called the Tevinter Imperium, and the Magisters ruled it. And BTW, it practiced slavery of elves and other humans.... well, not unlike the real world Roman Empire.

And it fell. How much you want to blame that on Andraste is up to you. ;)

This again?

If you arguing that mages should rule on moral grounds, then having magic doesn't make you a better leader.

If you are arguing mages should rule because might makes right and mages are more powerful than mundanes, then the very fact that mundanes are able to keep them shackled proves they aren't strong enough to deserve to lead.

The centuries-long First Blight probably had a lot of influence in the decline of the Imperium. In my opinion more than Andraste.

I think the similarity to Roman Empire is huge. Because the Tevinters never made a Tevinter citizen a slave, they were elven and dwarven citizens as well and they were not a slave. I think it has more to do with their nationalism which still exists today than anything else.

The chant of light itself claims Maker helped Andraste by doing things like making all Tevinter crops die. This is nothing short of using magic to beat magic.

Or the Blight tainted the lands. You know, because it's a blight.

Yeah, maybe its garbage like everything else chant of light says and Andraste was simply a woman who took advantage of a situation and nothing about her was "holy".

I know what the Chant stated. We don't know if it's true or not (and if it was really the Maker, that's not about magic beating magic, but a god beating mortals). What we know is that during the first Blight the darskpawn was present on the Imperium for nearly two centuries (and during one there were no GW to counterattack them). The damages the Imperium suffered during the Blight was massive. Ferelden haven't fully recovered after 10 years from a Blight that dured one. Andraste attacked the Imperium after 28 years. The Imperium didn't recover and wasn't in a good condition when Andraste attacked, so I'd say it was a lot important, regardless if Andraste was a simple woman, a mage or had the Maker as a weapon.

Why do you think the many deserve that protection?  If the mages are able to protect themselves, why would they feel compelled to help those who cannot?

Err...

So that contributing members of society do not go to waste as slaves or corpses at the hands of beings far ore powerful than they could ever hope to be (blood-mages, abominations). Not to mention both things being terrible tragedies.

That's telekinesis, Kyle!

Seriously mages ruling would be like be like a military state. Just because you have the biggest gun doesn't mean you know how to properly use it.

Pre-Blight Tevinter was that already, they kind of let it get to their heads, that said they probably wouldn't screw up as badly as they did if they had another swing at it.

Brute strength, especially applied by a minority that is vastly outnumbered by the general population, will only get you so far. Look at what happened to the Imperium of old. If it weren't for the genius play by Maferath they probably would have ended up in a much weaker position than they are today.

Look to the sorcerers and sorceresses in The Witcher, the Mortalitasi of Nevarra, the seers of Rivain, or the Keepers of the Dalish. It is much more prudent and efficient to have the mundanes come to rely on the mages in some fashion.

Mages should work out, first. Have you seen how scrawny they are? Except Orsino, that dude should have been a basketball player.
