For me, holding on to Starfang is a matter of preparation.

Think about how the metal is acquired... When that kid grows up, I want my character to have a kryptonite sword ready.

2H Starfang is really good. Not saying it's better than the Maul, but its Free and it has 17 Damage and +3 Str so thats like 20 Damage. Oh and its FREE. Thats why I like it. Plus I need to save my 120 or so gold for the Far Song Bow. Maybe when my PC is a 2H Warrior I will buy the Maul.

Hey all!

Why couldn't they make the meteor metal into an axe or a mace/hammer?

Statistically, axes are the best after 30 strength, right

It's crap because I'm not allowed to form two Daggers out of the Meteor metal. So what can my rogues use? I don't want to use a Longsword and a Dagger, I WANT TWO DAGGERS.

Has anybody come across the random encounter for the axe "Axameter"? I never have and would like to eventually.

Yes! And JethroTull79 forgot to mention, that its FREE!!! :D

But also it is much easier and faster too find, then Topside's Honor, or Keening Blade, or Yusaris and Ageless.

... and its FREE!!!!:wizard:

Only for warriors and the Keening Blade is comparable. Rogues do better with daggers. Arcane Warriors get more mileage out of Spellweaver than Starfang.

My DW City Elf Warrior loves her Starfang/Keening Blade combo, if only because it looks badass, particularly when the Keening Blade has a flame rune and Starfang has a lightning one (I like the 'Swords of Light and Darkness' look it gives).

Though yeah, Starfang has the best 'base stats' of any longsword. I've never had the twohanded version, but I assume its the same way. The rest depends on which bonuses you want.

In my experience this is the rarest of all the random encounters. I've only had it trigger once in over 5 run-throughs of the game. I got it travelling to the Brecilian Forest from Orzammar I think, but that probbly doesn't mean anything.

On my third playthough, I just had the encounter trigger on my way from Redcliffe to the Circle Tower (doing Redcliffe first).

First playthough, don't recall when it triggered, but I never collected the ore. (duh-oh)

Second playthrough, triggered about half way through. (and I did multiple playthroughs for the endings on this one)

CunDex Rogue. Used Starfang and Biteback Ax against Archdemon. Grandmaster silverite, paralyze, slow, flame and hale runes......paralyze the archdemon and then flurry it to death. Add a little concentrated deathroot extract....

Second playthrough (one of endings), Alistair had it until my strength was up enough to carry it. When I did the spare Loghain, he took off with it!!!! Dang it! That was my best weapon! Took SOOO much longer to kill that dratted AD. All my companions were dead, and there I am hacking at it's ankles....very pathetic.

I've tried the running aimlessly around the map thing, but it never works for me. The encounter invariably pops when I'm actually on my way to do something.

Caps lock truly is the cruise control for cool.

Also, how do you get Starfand? I've played this game through 12+ times and never seen it. Which sucks as I'm generally stuck with this lousy meteor metal sword when I fight the arch-demon.

You are evil, Lauron. EVIL!!!

And to show my EVILNESS:
"cost" is a regular verb! Thus: cost, cost, cost
You could also use the "simple past": "costs"

I failed to consider dual wielding warrior builds for some reason. :pinched: Well, in every other situation I still cling to my opinions. For a sword and board user, the Keening Blade is almost identical to Starfang. It is only a question of what the player prefers more: higher attack from Keening or better defense from Starfang. The only thing that makes Starfang competitive is it is useable by rogues and potentially available much earlier. The divide is simply not wide enough for me to feel Starfang is unequivocally the best one-handed sword available. Rogues are better off with daggers or Duncan's sword, apparently. Not that dual dagger rogues are my preference. Only that its superiority to sword/dagger or sword/sword is common knowledge; making Starfang not too great for rogues.

On a purely superficial level, I dislike its design. Too... fantastic? :P I prefer the plain longsword models to those wavy blade designs.

only thing about its looks that i don't like is that i feel terrible putting a rune into it because it don't look as awesome anymore once you put a flame rune in it it looks to bad ass in its original form

Flame runes make all weapons look weaksauce. Starfang looks great with a Lightning or Frost rune.

Ya frost looks okay but it ruins the color of the blade so it don't look as awesome and it makes the glowing lines harder to see which IMO are the coolest part. Lightning is ok too but there again hard to see the sword

Yeah, that's partly why I'm not a fan of flame runes. They obscure weapons and force lighting effects on my melee warriors. My preference is frost. It's subtle and unobtrusive. That applies to my dislike of Starfang's looks too, actually. On the whole, I'm not a fan of overly flashy weapons and special effects that try too hard to look impressive.

I have only once.  In over 10 play throughs.  Think King Arthur.

Edit: And Monty Python of course . . .

I have a dual-wielding rogue who now has all the dual-wielding feats. Would love to give him Starfang for his main hand, together with another 1-handed sowrd in his off-hand, but his strength isn't quite up there yet to handle Starfang. In the meantime, Alistair's got it, with a shield. I just got the 'traveller's sword' (think that's what it's called), which also looks pretty nice. A lot depends on what runes you add.

Wow, it really is the awesome sauce, but especially as a 2-H. I'd always given it to Alistair before I got RtO, then between Maric's and Duncan's blade, I decided to just give Starfang to Oggie. He looks kinda cute with a sword bigger than him. I may be in the minority here, but Starfang is one of the few blades I think looks good with the flame rune. Makes it look more ripply.
