If Shepard survived all the endings, then indoctrination theory would be true, and we'd end up with something like this for Synthesis and Control:

This was from one of team's concept artists, when they had a story about Shep joining with the Reapers (that's Ash discovering him).

If Shepard survived, then I'd actually play out the endings instead of turning the game off before they happen. It wouldn't solve all the problems, but for me, it would solve the most offensive one - Shepard's forced suicide.

I would play each of them with different Shepards, with Destroy being the most common because I feel it's the one that's the most consistent with Shepard's character portrayal through the series while there are only hints of the others in specific dialogue options. Is Refuse also available to those of us without DLC in this hypothetical version of the game? Because in that case, it would probably be the one I'd choose most (with Shepard's survival, of course).

I'd like to think there are ways Shepard could have survived. I recently read a story where people travelled the galaxy with devices that basically destroyed them in one location and recreated them in another, so it would be nice if this was what happened in Synthesis - Shepard just appeared on an alien world after the beam did its thing. And in Control, it would be cool if Shepard's mind could still exist as it was, using a hologram/clone/robot body to interact with people in a more human way while inside the Reaper shell. And maybe Shepard's armor in the rubble was just a piece that broke off, which is why it wasn't shown to breathe. I'd like to think that... but I know the game's intent is for them to die, so it would still feel like killing my Shepards, and I decided long before ME3's release that I wouldn't that.

I would choose whichever ending has my Shepard on the beach with the crew, chilling. That was actually the ending I wanted.

Mass Effect concept artist Matt Rhodes

This was a very, very early idea for Shepard. In this image he has been forced to turn to Reaper technology to accomplish his goals (*cough* Saren *cough*) and he’s being confronted by the new human Specter, Ashley.

Shepard surviving the blue and green endings could have some very negative repercussions, after all, ones that don't exist in the current ending.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind that. Post EC synthesis is pretty damn cheery.

That would have been a very interesting concept to explore, or at least choose to explore it if the player wanted to.

I can't imageine the sh*tstorm if ME3 ALSO railroaded players into having Shepard become a reaper.

To survive synthesis, simple; Throw TIM's body into the beam like this.

No change. Shepard's survival never came into the decision.

Damn right my man, it never even crossed my mind. All I cared about was saving the most amount of lives possible, my Shepard becoming Reaper God was just a bonus.

That's one of the main reasons I didn't mind my Shepard dying. She's had a full life, and it was the ultimate hero's sacrifice to end their legacy. That's not to say that people with PTSD are broken or can't live happy lives (war is ugly but I'm still happy to be alive). It just felt like more real.

I chose Synthesis because my Shepard always valued the worth of synthetics (seeing as how she's partly synthetic after ME2). When the geth asked "Does this unit have a soul?" and when Legion sacrificed himself, I knew that they had more to offer to the universe (let's not forget the Geth were initially peaceful and only attacked in retaliation to the Quarians). I felt like organics would keep creating synthetics in the future after destroyed, so we'd always have this issue all over again. I don't believe Synthesis will result in universal peace, but it will give them one less thing to fight about. Since organics still retain their emotions/thoughts/will, they can fight about other things now.

In the end, I always believe in protecting all life, so Synthesis was the choice with the most lives saved. The Reaper machines even help rebuild the cities faster. ^-^

And that's what makes me shake my head in disgust over the endings (well, one of the things)

I would absolutely prefer if Shepard survived, but I understand the reasoning/realism behind Shep making the ultimate sacrifice. Admittedly, it made me very sad for a while because it reminded me that even the strongest fighters have an end. =( I play games for an escape, so I prefer fairytale endings where everyone skips into the sunlight, laughing and holding hands.
