a think a spacer, ex-military war hero, turned pirate might be amusing to play. wonder what the character's complete backstory would read like for such a build.
so in other words, a male version of Jack. tsk tsk tsk you guys aren't creative at all, you're still mentally bound to the same limitations of the trilogy. spacer, war hero, spectre AGAIN........can't you come up with something original? or at least original to the ME universe?
A Geth tech support guy, specialised at support for the MMO Galaxy of Fantasy.
One day that seems like any other some terrorists performs some hind of heist or terrorist attack in which this poor civilian becomes a target for this group simply forbeinv at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Or perhaps from the players perspective the right place.
Personaly, I hope we get a few different playable species.
Not playing a Council species might help as you arn't taken quite as seriously by the establishment.
Or maybe a Geth nanny would be more unique. Citadel daycare.
"This unit cares not which of the parties involved initiated petty hostilities; unless a ceasefire is reached immediately, direct intervention will be necessary."
Sorry, could not help myself.
To stay on topic, I think it is high time for a space pirate MC in the ME (imagine all the sick drops). Your ship could be a mobile scrapyard, a dingy, barely holding together hunk of junk that can make the Kessel Run in less than howevermany parsecs (which is actually kind of stupid because "parsec" is a measure of distance not time but I digress. Brain too sleep-deprived and caffeine-addled to elaborate). An important part of gameplay would be exploration, wherein you dig your way through paw shops and grabage heaps for parts. Also allows for ship customization.
Orrrr a Specter super-spy who does not have their face plastered over every single vid screen in existence, only uses their status to get out of most serious run-ins with law enforcement, and pilots a super-sleek (preferably black with red highlights) tuned-up murder machine with stealth capabilities. An important part of gameplay would be exploration, wherein you dig your way through pawn shops and steal stuff from secret research labs - for parts. Also allows for ship customization.

As for my role, a space pirate sounds cool. As long as I am in no way tied to the government I will be happy. I do not want to be a soldier, c-sex agent, private detective, or any other form of service worker. Its all over used and I would like a different role, one where mt character is in charge.

The next Mass Effect protagonist should be a enforcer of an authoritarian regime.
My thoughts exactly. Play as a Batarian SIU agent taking out enemies of the state.
Or maybe just let me be a slaver and git me some humans!

I don't care for the "Start from a normal citizen route" that DA2 presented. The story felt.... false.
I'd have to agree there. I would like to pick from a variety of possible backgrounds, including but not limited to a military one.

1. Human
2. Quarian
3. Turian
Obviously both male and female options with customization with face for all but in the case of 2 and 3 we also get to customize the suit colors and their actual look to start with because that is important to both races.
For classes I would like an overall spector class because that gets me the plausible do all my destroying yet still stay out of jail reasoning that is integral to a galaxy saving plot. For a subcategory for all my choices I'd like to play all subclasses of solider, pirate, nobody, or monk.
Our spector ship should be tweaked in both interior and exterior based on our species so we can see how each species has evolved in the game.

Personally, I think that it would make a lot more sense to play as someone who already has some combat experience. Not some Alliance lackey, but a merc, a pirate, or a smuggler. Imagine playing a Han Solo or Boba Fett-esque character - that would be pretty sweet.

A Boba Fett or Han Solo with a Death Star?R0gueHunt3R wrote...
Hmm, the main problem with starting as an average Joe is that it tends to lead to a lot of ludonarrative dissonance. After all, you would would have to go from possibly never having used a firearm to being able to duke it out with the best of 'em in a very short space of time - remember how that problem plagued Far Cry 3?

Of course, put some action in there, but I think this role is ideal if you're like me an want to explore the galaxy...seek out new life...to boldly go...

If species selection was a thing: Human, Asari and Turian would probably be the ones available. (Similar animations and recyclable voices if they can work a "Turian" audio filter). I'd like to try an Asari.

Any freelance background that isn't military would be fine by me. I've had enough of the space marine trope in ME.

It will be nice to break out of the "Oorah" role.

Maybe that way of picking another race is a decent enough compromise.
You could experience the same story from diffent points of view or maybe you could have individual different stories.

I agree that the main character shouldn't be an average Joe. The average Joe shouldn't be very capable at all in combat. And he should know nothing at all about space travel. Could an average Joe simply hop into an airplane and fly it? Of course not, and space travel would require much more technical know-how than flying an airplane.
The protagonist should have a background that makes their competency in both areas (combat and space travel) believable.
