Alcohol & Smoking in DA:I

One of the concept art. If you pay close attention, you will see the Inquisitor holding a pipe.
I know it is just a concept but it would be really cool to have characters, followers as well the Inquisitor be able to actually smoke and drink alcohol in the game.
If we do, we should have some Skyrim-eque style to them. Drink alcohol and get some boost to stamina/mana for a short time before losing that + getting random stagger if drank too much....
Thoughts ?

Drinking possibly but smoking? in a game? with the way smoking is looked down upon in society at the minute, I highly doubt it.
You could do it in GTA V.

I am not asking for cigars...Just pipes. It was very common for people to smoke pipes in medieval times as well as in many fantasy literature. & I don't think smoking some herb-based substance is going to give you cancer.

To be honest, even if it's just cosmetic I'd still be for the smoking thing.

Where do you think Nicotine comes from?

Isn't nicotine the substance that makes you addicted? It is harmful in large doses and can cause death but not cancer.DinoSteve wrote...

As long as you get the option to refuse to drink or smoke as well. Personally didn't like how Shepard was automatically written to drink alcohol.
Same. My army will be Sober. It's law.

Oh? For one thing, smoking anything will increase your chances of emphysema. That's just about as bad as cancer. Even the "herb-based" substances you're probably talking about.
Many herbs aren't that harmless. A very common form of smoke for pipes in the Middle Ages was opium. It may not give you cancer, but it's addictive as hell. While I think that an opium addiction could be an interesting place for a game to go to, Dragon Age and Thedas aren't the world to explore that in.
On topic: I'm okay with neither being in games for my main character. I am trying to quit cigarettes this year and I don't drink. However, if it's in an adult game, I don't see why not. So long as it's optional; I'd rather not have my character be a drinker and/or smoker by default..

Sorry, but you're wrong on this one. Recent research has shown that nicotine is causing cancer. Overall, it makes a nice cozy place for cancer to take up residence. From wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicotine
While no epidemiological evidence supports that nicotine alone acts as a carcinogen in the formation of human cancer, research over the last decade has identified nicotine's carcinogenic potential in animal models and cell culture.[64][65] Nicotine has been noted to directly cause cancer through a number of different mechanisms such as the activation of MAP Kinases.[66] Indirectly, nicotine increases cholinergic signalling (and adrenergic signalling in the case of colon cancer[67]), thereby impeding apoptosis (programmed cell death), promoting tumor growth, and activating growth factors and cellular mitogenic factors such as 5-LOX, and EGF. Nicotine also promotes cancer growth by stimulating angiogenesis and neovascularization.[68][69] In one study, nicotine administered to mice with tumors caused increases in tumor size (twofold increase), metastasis (nine-fold increase), and tumor recurrence (threefold increase).[70] N-Nitrosonornicotine (NNN), classified by the IARC as a Group 1 carcinogen, is produced endogenously from nitrite in saliva and nicotine.
Also, nicotine's closest cousin? Nightshade. It's bad enough I'm hooked, but I don't want my Inquisitor to have the habit as well.

One of my Dwarven Inquisitors will be addicted to kohl pipes and Dwarven ale, if it's possible.

It doesn't necessarily need to be Tobacco to mess you up. The residues inside the smoke can cause all kinds of complications to your lungs. (Tar, carbon, etc.) Cancer might not be a worry but any of the COPD's are highly possible from continuous inhalation and I think as fun as rp'ing your toon having emphysema with a limited time to live, smoking anything sends a wrong message to kids playing this game despite it being rated only for adults. I understand my reply might sound incredibly arrogant but it's not intended to be.The Sin wrote...

If intoxication is a feature of DAI or a future game I wouldn't be offended and might even try it out for comedic value. I doubt I'd want to spend my gold on drinking and smoking though, especially if I can't just conjure up more.

What you see Gandalf and others puffing away on in pipes in the movies is called by Tolkien "pipe-weed" ... and appears to basically be a kind of tobacco, first grown by Hobbits, who seem to be the chief users.
