Why not? Geralt lights up every now and then, I'd love to sit back and have an auld smoke every now and then as my Inquisitor, hobbit style.

Geralt? As in the witcher? I don't recall seeing him smoke.:? Drink and get wasted, yes. Smoking? No. Iorveth has a dream which has him smoking, though:

On topic: I would like more ways to customize my character, but the opportunity to smoke is not on my wish list. I can't stand it in real life, so I have little desire to see it in a game. I know that's not an argument that is always applicable, but in this case it is for me.

I quit smoking years ago, ironically because I found PC gaming to be more addictive (didn't hurt that is was cheaper either). When I quit, I was at the stage where I would vomit 2-3 days a week, cough myself to sleep and wake up every day with chest pains.

And it still really pissed me off when in Peter Jackson's LotR Return of the King, they had Gandalf cough after inhaling from his pipe.

While getting hooked on chemicals is a definite problem, they aren't the initial reason people begin smoking. What I experienced when I started at 14 and in the people around me was how much easier it became to focus our thoughts. Wallflowers like myself lost our shyness and became capable of starting and joining conversations easily. Even with people I probably would have hated if we hadn't had smoking in common to make us interact (smokers were generally nice to other smokers).

Kids who were really stressed over their parent's divorce or being treated as a lost cause by the school and teachers were able to calm down, relax and focus due to the poisonous fumes they inhaled. I'm not advocating teen smoking. Just trying to turn the focus a little off the chemical side, because it doesn't explain why people smoke long enough to get addicted (which varies from each individual person).

And in a world with as many daily worries as that of Dragon Age, I can easily imagine tons of peasants needing a pipe of tobacco or its Thedas equivalent to focus their thoughts.

Well, there was no tobacco in Europe until after the discovery of the New World. For the 'medieval purists'. Plenty of taverns with lots of ale being downed, but no smoking until the 1600s. Even hookahs aren't really being used in the Mideast until the 1500s.

Yep. It's amazing how pervasive tobacco imagery has been, that people are imagining that Europeans smoked commonly in the Middle Ages.

and I think as fun as rp'ing your toon having emphysema with a limited time to live, smoking anything sends a wrong message to kids playing this game despite it being rated only for adults.

Oh lordy.

Fun fact: the first person to warn of the dangers of smoking was not the U.S. Surgeon-General, but King James the I of England, in 1604. Because people were already starting to do it in England by the early 1600s.

BTW, I think the idea that having your character use something in games is likely to make the player do it as well, seems as bit as incorrect an idea as some of the more ludicrous notions about video games and violence.

So no, I don't think people should never see their characters drinking ale just because some people playing it might be under 21. (Same with smoking, if they introduce some Thedan fantasy equivalent of tobacco.) :police:

As long as it's optional. I'd hate to have my Inquisitor smoke or drink.

I'm cool with it. Wouldn't expect any combat benefits, but having the option is nice.

Most likely involves the "Drunk vision" or similar visual effects. It'd be amusing to have a secret accessory akin to the Beer Glasses from the Simpsons as an easter egg.

Vanquish actually had a really cool smoking mechanic where you could light up a cigarette. I really thought nothing of it until I found out you could use it to distract the mechanised baddies.

I wouldn't mind a pipe collection in DAI. You can pick them up from various merchants in your travels as well as loot them. This pipe lets people know that you mean business:

I can only imagine what exotic pipes we could get from the varied races/cultures of Thedas.

Can we add traits to our inquisitor like Alcoholism? They drown their sorrows on their down time and friends and love interest try to help you get of of your drunken stupor?

If I recall my high school history text book, the only reason James I allowed tobacco was because his advisors told him of the tax benefits from smoking. Likewise, if what that woman who came dressed as Elizabeth I said was true, Europeans smoked a lot of stuff they brought back from the New World, including potatoes, except for chillis. I have yet to verify that.

Being able to smoke a pipe or take a drink or something like that would be a nice addition, but it's pretty far down on my personal priorities list.

I tried that with Shepard in ME hoping to unlock drunken/alcoholic dialogue options and interrupts. It didn't work :(

As long as it's not mandatory (which I'm sure, if it's added, it won't be) I'm perfectly fine with it. I hate being around smokers (I have asthma unfortunately) so I definitely don't want my character around it, lol!

Yes, but nothing much happens..You might as well be drinking water...

Also no pipe smoking....

We need those...

If the Inquisitor is smoking a pipe, he needs a Yorkshire accent pronouncing words such as turnip like "turniped". And needs to have a certain fondness for pies.

Giving in to cretins like those on Fox News, whom hadn't even played the game at the time is not the way to go sunny-boy. Games will never evolve/mature with this kind of attitude.

You know I actually agree with you. I need to work on the delivery of written humour a bit more I guess.
