So apparently a female dwarf named Bianca was a girl he was in love with, and she made the crossbow that would later be named Bianca. This is why he treats it as his girlfriend and pretends it has a mind, it's him applying her mind and personality to the crossbow as a way to hold onto her memory.

Yet in DA2 Legacy, this guy apparently made Bianca, Varric says he kept trying to make repeating crossbows and Bianca is the only one that ever worked.-

And in case anyone wants a refresher of the guy, 7:13 on the video time-

So what is going on here? Did Gerav and Bianca actually work together on the crossbow and Varric just left her out of the story, or is there a plot hole or retcon here? And if Varric explains to the Inquisitor about Bianca's origins, which person is going to be the canon creator of it?

Oh for crying out loud...

Varric  got the crossbow first and named it after his girlfriend after she left him or died.

or

Varric lost Bianca because she died or left him and then when he got the crossbow and named it after her to honor her.

Bianca designed the crossbow, Gerav made it, Varric run off with it after he realized that Bianca was a slimy Carta dwarf.

At least that is how I'm head-cannoning that string of event.

@andy: Yeah, I didn´t get it either. In the comic books there is this dwarf female Bianca, who made the crossbow, if I understood that correctly, yet in the DLC it´s Gerav.

Don´t know which version is correct.

Bianca IS Gerav. It's the only solution.

Varric is known to be a liar - why are you instantly jumping to the conclusion that it's a plot hole when the guy tends to embellish every story that he tells? Would it really be that surprising if he happened to lie about Bianca, too?

I agree with you since I'm pretty sure that's close to how it is, Bianca designed the crossbow and apparently was going to use the design to get rich, they took it Gerav who had been trying to make repeating crowsbows but couldn't get one to work properly with the exception of Bianca.

After it was made the guild caught up to them and Bianca was presumed to be dead, he named it after her due to how much he loved her and a conversation they had which was shown in until we sleep.

Not sure why people think it's a plot hole, of like with someone designed whatever and didn't know anything about building it so they went to someone who did which was Gerav, also he was supposed to modify Bianca by adding something according to a codex letter. Oh and Bianca might still be alive according to kirby.

I am aware this is like waaaay old but... One correction.

At one point in the game, Varric claims that Branka, as in the Paragon who goes nutters and abandons Oghren to look for Carradin's secret to making golems is the one who made the crossbow that Varric calls Bianca. Bioware really dropped the ball on this one.

He also says that he bought it at the Black Emporium. Varric will give you a different story every time you ask about Bianca's origin.

The real story is that Gerav came up with the idea of a repeating crossbow but couldn't make it work. Varric took his useless prototype to Bianca the smith and she got it to function. However, Varric covered up her involvement to protect her from the Carta.

This is all laid out in WoT Vol. 2.

If you make a save before interacting with Varric and getting to this dialogue, you'll notice that this story randomly changes. One is about him winning a game against Branka, another is him finding it in a dragonbone chest that he pried open, and another that he pried out of someone's dead hands. My personal favorite is the one where he finds it in the Black Emporium, in a barrel marked "swag" lol.

He also claims that he won it in a poker game, or traded a ham sandwich for it. If you ask him about the crossbow before your approval is high enough, he tells you a lie (which seems to be randomly generated by the game from a whole list of possible lies.)

After you actually meet Bianca, he tells you the truth: Bianca is the one who got the crossbow to work, but Varric is concealing her part in its creation because he doesn't want anyone else getting their hands on the design.

Bianca the smith got the crossbow to work. Varric tells Merril in DA2 and the Inquisitor (before high approval) that it is the one story he cannot tell. So Varric lies about it. If the Carta knew that somone was alive that could make more, Varric would probably be kidnapped to force Bianca to make more. Or Bianca's husband and parents would be threatened with death to make her make more.

So Varric lies about the origin of the crossbow.

Varric gives a different story for how he got Bianca (the crossbow) every time you ask.

It's not a plot hole, it's Varric's inconsistent stories in action.
