My heart sinks when I read the consequential news report, So:

I am forced to "headcanon" executing her in a soft-spoken, apologetic, and gentle manner, because my Shepard has a divinely given gift of foresight... Requisite et Pace.

Why be gentle? She's studying indoctrination, using live test subjects. Do you feel bad if Henry Lawson gets killed too?

I (and my Shepard) was raised to be gentle with ladies...

She's an Asari. God will forgive you.

He already has; and besides Asari count has well...

Yeah, this exchange is a little serious for my tastes. Take care.

Here, let me help

I've never killed Rana. I really need to sometime. :P

I always thought Rana might be useful in finding some sort of defense against indoctrination. She has researched it (and got some results)...and she seemed healthy. Not my best idea

I get the feeling she might've played an intriguing side role, if they had been able to flesh out Thessia.

Shiala - If she's still alive in ME2, then I have to watch her flirt with my Shepards. So I'd prefer having her killed off in ME1 just to avoid that, but I don't let it influence my roleplaying. MainShep let her live, actually.

Flirting isn't a crime, even if some people would like to think so.

I'd rather give Shepard the option to shoot them down (not literally), but as it is there's no dialogue for Shepard to say he/she isn't interested, so the only way to avoid those scenes is to avoid the characters themselves. But like I said, it doesn't change my roleplaying decisions in ME1 - Shiala lives or dies the same number of times as she would have if that scene in ME2 didn't exist. I just prefer the version without her.

And there are other crimes that Shepard can kill her for anyway.

My Shepards who choose the "you better run before the whole place explodes" option usually don't care what happens to her, so finding out what happens later on doesn't bother them. MainShep was kind of hoping Rana would find out something about indoctrination that might help her cause, but wasn't surprised to find out that it ended up like everyone else who tries to study the Reapers too closely.

You should be flattered when a chick hits on you...

As for Rana, well, my Shepard's foresight told him everything; he had to sacrifice one chick to save a dozen others.

The first time I could let Rana go. That you cannot shoot her the second time, however. *facepalm*

It doesn't have the effect they're going for when I'm playing a Shepard who's either not interested in women or asari.  Then I just have to headcanon that Shepard is waiting for an opportunity to back away slowly. Sha'ira had the worst scene by far.

I never kill Rana as I sort of view her as an Asari Conrad Verner.

I'm kind of glad that sparing Rana backfires in the end.

Paragon decisions rarely backfire, and that is one of the exceptions...even if it does occur off screen and is of little consequence to the main character or the main story.

What do you mean?

I think that's Liara btw. At least in ME1.

Maybe she's claustrophobic. And at her age, a few years is too many; why not simply force her to retire and become a social worker?

Because it's unjust. Crime should be punished or atoned for in some capacity. And then I just can't get behind letting a known criminal -- one ready to take over the 'ring -- walk completely free, and trust that she won't give into the temptation of going back for ... whatever reason. That's not to say that her doing social work isn't a good outcome. I just don't approve of doing what it takes for that to happen. It was neither agreed upon nor forseeable at the time of the decision.

Surely, you can pardon/forgive/overlook a bit of past drug-dealing in exchange for the vital information leading to the successful down-bringing of, not one, but two notorious slavers?

And if the reputation of her little gang is indeed FUBAR, then simply make her retire. She'll "parole" herself by being some kind of social worker on Omega.

You don't make these sort of rationalizations for other females you have to kill in the games, do you? I must've mowed through dozens of Eclipse.

While Tela Vasir is busy rebuking me for working with Cerberus and telling me "not to judge her", I'm busy (and silently) applying medi-gel to her wounds; much to Liara's visible dismay.

That's because Vasir was cool and right about Cerberus.

How about the others?

My motto is "spare if you can", alas, none of us could. As for Cerberus Nemesis' and Phantoms, hey, it was an act of mercy.

I concur, as it is said that sometimes to the right thing in the long run, one must get his hands dirty.

In order to feel justified in killing Rana, I play Feros first and spare Shiala (because Shepard doesn't truly understand indoctrination) and the colonists. Then I go to Noveria and get a full explanation of it from Matriarch Benezia. By the time I get to Virmire, I know that Rana has most certainly become indoctrinated and needs to die. Then I pick up Liara so she can whine about spending 50 years researching the Protheans and everything is just handed to Shepard.

I always make sure Conrad makes it to Illium because that's the only way I can get a store discount from that snotty Asari.

I help Kenn set is own prices so he can get himself off Omega.

When I do the Helena side quest, I get her to retire.

I never do Nasana Dantius any favors! She can twist in the wind.

I usually help Gianna take Anolais down (but half the time I ignore her on Illium). I always narc on the Asari who wants Shep to plant a bug.

Sometimes I help refund guy, but he's kind of annoying.

I save Talitha whenever I play Colonist Shepard. On the flip side, I always kill the gang member who wants Earthborn Shepard to spring his buddy.

Always give Thax the information about the Asari stealing merchandise.

I always kill Balak in ME1.

Elnora always dies.
