Like in ME2 i have a problem figuring out how much the choice of armor suit/pieces influence tha game. Overall i change a few bits but still holds on N7 throughout the game in spite of being able to buy any armor ingame i like. I just collect whatever i find around during the campaign. It is my impression it doesnt change a hole lot. Is this correct ?

And for the squad mates: does sheppard choice of armor have any influence on them (i myself thk not so far but i dont know for sure)  ?

I'll be honest I never noticed the slightest bit of difference between the parts I was wearing, other than cosmetic of course.

As a test I once equipped all the piece that were meant to give me stronger shields and they still dropped as quickly as before.

Just go for what looks good would be my suggestion or as you have the PC version, do a little Coalesced modding, that's the only way you'll notice a difference.

Armor is mostly a cosmetic thing for me (which is why I choose the customizable modular armor over the non customizable suits). Granted many times I will choose which parts I use based on my class (such as chestpieces or gauntlets) but it is still a looks thing for me. I will not equip head gear that covers up my face. The most I am willing to compromise is a few visors that might cover the eyes but not the entire face.

I can't see that I've ever seen the parts make enough of a difference to matter, either. Except perhaps if you go with a full weapon damage set.

I find the bonus effectiveness really varies on what the modifier you are looking for it. Normally I don't find a lot of difference with health and shields, but power recharge or ammo capacity I find will make a difference. Normally I don't really worry too much about modifiers, but if it fits my character's design in my head.

For your squadmates, the choice of armor can have a large impact. I always choose the recharge bonus armor for those squadmates that have that option (I believe Liara, EDI, Tali, and Javik have this option.) A 25% recharge bonus is noticeable.

For Shepard, since I play power classes, I tend to favor recharge pieces. Cerberus Spirit Armor is my favorite (except for having to wear the helmet) because you get a 30% recharge bonus, 30% power bonus, plus 10% each shields and shield regen.

Minor differences in shield strength may not seem noticeable, but they can accumulate to make a significant difference. If you play MP you really notice how much more durable Krogan and Batarian characters are than vanilla humans. Until I get the Spirit armor, I like to buff Shepard's shields. OTOH, I also care somewhat about the aesthetics. I don't like helmets that obscure Shepard's face, so I tend to go with visors rather than full helmets. I find the Recon Hood to be just awful.

Purely cosmetic. I tend to go towards the N7 Defender armor as it looks right on a sentinel or soldier.

It can make a difference, sure, but not so much that you should feel like you need to min/max to be able to survive. Go with the pieces you like the look of. But for the bonuses you do get, I find that power recharge and weapon damage are the bonuses you can actually observe and appreciate during gameplay.

I'm the same way. I mostly wear the Kuwashi visor. I actually love the recon hood and the death mask, though, and might actually use them in ME3 where you can make it so they're only on during combat and not conversations (unlike ME2 where I never touched them,  like most full helmets) but I get a weird bug on my system where occassionaly it distorts Shepard's face proportions and gives him crazy bugged-out eyes.

Which makes for great romance cutscenes, but still

I get those graphical distortions as well, and not just the eyes.
