The continent of Thedas breaks apart and every village is now seperated from each other.

Even that wouldn't be as bad as the relays being destroyed. Water is an easily managable obstacle with Thedasian technology. Heck, we have from the Band of Three Codexes that the Tevinters have even found a way to use magic in sea travel.
