It's unlikely you can upgrade it on console. I know for a fact selling it to Mikhail Dryden won't upgrade it.

In Awakening, you can add Heraldry to your shield... but thats the best you are going to get.

You can use them as ceremonial arms, in a manner. For combat you can switch to another set of weapons and when you're in town then you switch back to the Cousland arms. That way you'll always have them with you when you need them - e.g. to show who you are in the Landsmeet, or to stick the sword into Howe should he cross your path.

You can always 'switch' your combat set via the inventory screen in order to adapt to the current situation. For example, switch the shield for an off-hand dagger/sword in order to mow down hordes of grunts with Momentum, DW Sweep and Whirlwind, switch the shield back in if you want to dance with a pair of ogres. The cooldown on Momentum and Shield Wall is a bit of a pain in the hind quarters but it is manageable.

In the endgame I had to do it like that even though I wasn't carrying the family arms anymore, because I needed a longbow as in addition to the sword & shield and dual-wield sets.

In reality I could have used four or five sets, because in addition to a sword with general high-damage enchantments I made special swords for undead and darkspawn (Cold Iron runes and Silverite runes respectively, in swords that already had '+X damage vs. whatever').

Well, you're not intended to play through the game with the cousland sword and shield of highever. They're early game items.

However, it's still certainly possible to do so. The performance between high and low tier weapons isn't all that huge, especially once your strength is high.
