Everyone:

... maybe this has been discussed before and, if so, I apologize.

That said, what if the NPC agent system in DAI is set up so you have one agent per territory for nations and one agent per organization. With something like that, Hawke could be your agent in the Free Marches while The Warden could perform a similar function in Ferelden (or with the Grey Warden Order).

You'd be able to "personalize" your agents, but they'd remain as NPCs. That way, you could make the "stock" Hawke and Warden "your" Hawke and Warden.

This system could even work with other characters from the first two DA games that folks might want to see again in DAI. For example, depending on choices you made in DAO/DAA and DA2, the following are possible:

1. Zevran is your agent with the Antivan Crows.
2. Alistair is your agent in Ferelden (or with the Grey Warden Order).
3. Carver could be your contact with the Templars (well, what's left of them).
4. Bethany could be your contact with the Circle (well, what's left of it).
5. Leliana might be your agent with the Chantry.
6. Sten could help you with the Qunari.
7. Oghren and/or Varric could be your "boots on the ground" with the Dwarven kingdoms (Orzammar and Kal-Sharok).

The possibilities are, I think, quite numerous. So, what are your thoughts regarding this possibility of linking the agent system to characters from previous games?

well said and well thought out.

We shall see if Bioware does it that way.:innocent:

They won't be agents if they are in the game, most of the agents will be nameless people that are an expandable resource with a few exception since we know of at least one that was named during them demo which was Dagna who is an artficier.

Keeps form the centre of the game’s multiple, vast regions, and play a role similar to synchronisation points in Assassin’s Creed – capture one, and you’ll unlock quests. The more Inquisition agents dedicated to a keep, the more you can do. Fifty agents might rebuild a fallen colossus, for instance, boosting troop morale in the event of an invasion. Or you could send 10 agents to build a mine on top of a sulphur pit to shore up revenues.

As for old character's coming back, that's going to happen no matter what whether they are vital or just cameos so you really just need to accept that.

With a lot of new and returning characters promised for Dragon Age: Inquisition, were there internal arguments about which ones should come back as followers or play key roles in the game?

(Laughs) Not that I was privy to, no. I think there were a few fan favourites that we wanted to come back, and we had at one point planned a DLC for Dragon Age II called 'Exalted March' that we ended up not doing because we felt it was important to go ahead and switch over to new technology to really start focusing on Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Some of the characters that are returning are ones we'd planned to bring back for that DLC, so we really wanted to bring them back for Inquisition. A lot of that was kind of driven by the writers, so it's possible that they had some arguments, because there are a lot of really passionate fans, and every follower has a group of people that really want to see them again. We try to accommodate that as much as possibleJonathan Perry

Jonathan also revealed that some of the characters appearing in Inquisition were in fact meant to return to the series earlier in Dragon Age 2 in a planned expansion called Exalted March which was later cancelled: "We ended up not doing because we felt it was important to go ahead and switch over to new technology to really start focusing on Dragon Age: Inquisition. Some of the characters that are returning are ones we'd planned to bring back for that DLC,so we really wanted to bring them back for Inquisition."

There'll be a range of companions, and BioWare stressed that this involves a "significant returning cast". The in-game demonstration confirmed the return of Dragon Age 2's Varric - the dwarven rogue who narrates the game - and Cassandra Pentaghast, the Chantry Seeker who interrogates that narration out of him.

Cameron Lee, Mike Laidlaw and other devs have stated this aswell in various other places like game informer, the videos, the special podcast, amoung other sources.

Now *that* was informative. Thank you, Spectre Slayer.

Based on the quoted material, it does sound like we're going to see quite a few returning characters in various roles, just not necessarily in agent form as I propsed in my OP. Hmm. I wonder if we'll wind up with more from DA2 than DAO/DAA, though, since the developers seem to be pretty focused on getting DA2 returners in, since they had been planned for the now-cancelled DA2 expansion.

No problem, and I wouldn't say they are focused just on DA2 characters returning it's more like this is their third attempt at doing this content, the first attempt was cut from the game then rewritten for the exalted march expansion pack which was cancelled then they rewrote it yet again and put it into DAI. It seems like it must be important and if I remember correctly Hawke's story was supposed to end in it and they've said he/she might be back in DAI.

Besides talking about Flemeth a bit, basically confirming Leliana in the game informer article building a rivarly mage vs templar, mentioning Alistair if alive and king might do something against us depending on how we play for example taking over an occupied fortress in their territory will have consequences, briefly mentioing Sigrun, saying a character who was from DAO( npc) will get a expanded role and get a story like they did with Isabella but wouldn't say anymore then they just started doing on during pax so this person could be a companion, a npc or a agent.

I wouldn't rule out some of what you said just not sure if they'll be agents under us or allies work along us or against us depending on your playstyle, Leliana is the agent of the divine and Laidlaw said in the article I mentioned she might have some say given her appearnce in DA2 and that they just weren't looking for the warden and hawke.

In some epilogues Zevran is the leader of the crows or a rival organization, or training the wardens or being hunted, or traveling aaround or just not mentioned at all.

Alistair is a little harder since we have no clue what the wardens are doing nor do we know what the exiled one could do or if he'll follow our orders which is unlikely though I can see him working with us considering what maybe going on with the wardens.

Bethany and Carver would depend in if they were in the expansion back, what faction they joined and if they're still alive, though I could see them helping us out.

Sten I guess would only work with us if he's a Tal'Vashoth, don't think the Arishok would follow our orders or appear unless it was very important or when they're about to invade, which might happen in the next game.

Not sure about Oghren, it would depend on how long his body can withstand the taint since people can go on their calling anywhere from 5-30 years and it's been about over 10 years since then and he's a surface dwarf now, and has a few different roles, a couple of them he becomes a general, one he becomes a mercenary, a dangerous and drunken nuisance, wandering tthe world or setle down with Felsei.
e

It could go any number of ways and you've thought it out pretty well just think they'll work with us rather then take orders,  we'll just have to wait and see.
