Hello all,
Someone on a Mass Effect LJ group I'm a member of posted some links to a
short interview Jennifer Hale gave, in which she talked about her
(rather extensive) work on such games as MGS4 and, of course, Mass
Effect 1 & 2.

Here are the links:

What's interesting to note is that when she talks about Shepard, she remarks
that sometimes female leaders get overlooked. Although this
viewpoint is slowly changing, it is still apparent, especially when
Ms. Hale asked fans to let Bioware know that they like, and want to
see more of, Female Shepards.

So this is one fan who thinks she should get more appreciation,
especially now that we are just swamped with Male Shepard in EVERY
commercial, trailer, etc.

Even a trailer which showed BOTH Shepards, would be appreciated.

And yes, I have heard the arguments that it's a 'marketing decision' or
(somewhat subtly) that 'gamers would just get too confused' or that it's 'stupid to change/add her in the middle of the trilogy' over the gender of Shepard.

Maybe it's too late with ME2 coming in less than a week, but (perhaps for
ME3?) I would like to see something from Bioware that would show
they are thankful for Ms. Hale and all the hard work she's done.

For someone who's voiced the MAIN CHARACTER, and even goes so far as to
praise the voice actor who does Male Shepard, I think the least that
Bioware could do is spare a little of the limelight for her.

My thoughts anyway...

I think their ME3 marketing campaign should play the male and female Sheps off each other. Maybe having them stand back-to-back on cover work.

I could listen to Jennifer Hale talk all day long. She just has one of those pleasant voices, that can calm the soul. Thanks for the interview links!

Female Shepard anything has been requested for a long time. Pretty much ever since we found out that yes, we are playing Shepard in Mass Effect 2. Sadly, nothing.

An advertisement that demonstrated how you can choose for Shep to be male or female would be a cool idea. Even further demonstrates the amount of choice a player has in the game.

Heh, yeah that was me that posted them on LJ. Ironically, it was this forum I got them from.

I think hearing Jennifer Hale say that even she thought FemShep was overlooked finally made me admit to myself that the Sheploo-marketing really has gone to far this time...

It's a travesty that for all her brilliance as a VA in Mass Effect Jennifer Hale is not getting the same recognition as her sub-par peer.

Nice post. I also really hope that BioWare will show off more of Fem. Shepard. I really don't think that players are so stupid to the point that they won't figure out that you can play both genders as Shepard. Plus, Jennifer Hale deserves better...

Although I didn't play a full game with female Shepard (i tried it,but sometimes...) in ME1, this time, with all the differences between classes, I think i'll use some Engineer or Adept female Shepard.

And, hell, she has my favourite voice in all videogame industry, by far.

That may also be because I love Sheena Fujibayashi... a lot. Argh, I just need to play some Symphonia right now just to hear her.<3

Anyway, my full suport to her work with Shepard. Bioware should have at least showed her in some trailer.

Im not picky, all I want is first party screen shots and such from bioware, rather than having to wait til 1-2 weeks from release by 3rd party on how my 5 or so femshep imports will look in thier armor. Which is very badass looking armor too. Not flimsy like the light and medium armor from ME 1.

That'd be a badass cover.  But then, they'd need a default female Shepard face.

Personally, I think female Shepard should look like Bastila's CGI work.

Outstanding lady and she makes good points. Female Shep ( and Jennifer Hale ) doesn't get nearly the amount of promotion she deserves.

Honestly, Jennifer Hale *should* be the one getting more recognition because her VA work is just plain BETTER.

They have a default/canon female Shepard look. If you quick-play a female Shepard you know what I'm talking out. Like the male version it's a custom look that you can't quite reproduce separately.

Jennifer Hale's VO work is simply astounding and she deserves all the recognition for it.

Re-QFT.  Male chaunvinists. <_<  Meer's voice acting is almost always flat.  I played as FemShepard first and when I played as a male, I was like, "...seriously?"

I'm sorry, I listened to both of them and they both underwhelmed me, and I liked Jennifer Hale in KoTOR but for all the praise she gets in ME the difference between them was boring male voice or boring female voice.

As much as I like Hale, Sheperloo is the posterboy of ME and it would be stupid to change that for the final game.

I think female Shepards should get more recognition as well. I mean come on, even Hale thinks that BioWare doesn't giver FemShepard enough attention and she's right. If even the voice actress is voicing her concerns about it, then you know it might be worth considering.

But we've been asking for this for a looong time. BioWare may just not care.

Me, too.  I played as a FemShep first, so then I decided to make my own MaleShep, and completed about a quarter of the game before I couldn't take it anymore. He sounds like he just reads right off cards.  I'm told that Meer does Renegade Shep well, which I can maybe see, considering that  sarcasm is often flat and monotoned.

I dunno.  I understand why they keep him as a posterboy, for marketing reasons--and it DOES make sense.  :blush:But I really feel like Hale is this secret, tiny jewel of wild talent that's hidden in a FemShep playthrough that most adolescent boys will never get to discover.

Maybe she'll just be usforumites' secret.   :D

I'll definately agree that Jennifer Hale does a better job than Mark Meer.

*Sigh* This.

But it's unfortunate that the marketing dept's so convinced that femshep won't sell that they're unwilling to show her much AT ALL.  :crying:  Besides!  Showing off character customization can't be so bad, especially when you can show off great VA work at the same time.

Unfortunately, I think the fans have been letting the devs know they want to see more femshep, and zilch.

Mark Meer isn't terrible at all, he did what he was told in terms of how he should sound. He's not a bad VO.

And that's what people keep forgetting when they bash Mark Meer. That he's doing the lines how the director wants him to sound.

Fem-Shepard is a lie.. Where is the evidence of such a mythical creature?

... More seriously, they might be downplaying the role of Fem-shepard to avoid a repeat of the lesbian sex fiasco. Not to mention the fact that you can't show the Subject Zero adds with a FemShep

Hale is soooo overrated on these forums, and Meer underrated. It's a mystery to me.
