Reading the discussions in the other threads about justice in Synthesis ending and whether the reapers were right or wrong about the culling of organics through the cycle, a logic problem has occured to me.

First let me start by my understanding of the cycle mechanism:

Every ~50,000 years (or whenever the state of galacitic civilisation is advanced to the trigger point) the Reapers come out of dark space to wipe out all advanced life, harvest the leading species to create a new Reaper containing the genetic goo of that species along with their technological knowledge.

This process would increase their numbers by each cycle, plus during the harvest war they mostly lose only the "husks", i.e. indoctrinated organics as foot soldiers, they rarely lose any of their main "members", i.e. reaper dreadnoughts. OK this sounds like a sustainable campaign once their numbers is high enough.

The problem is bootstrapping the process. We learn that the Catalyst was created by the Leviathans to solve their "synthetics overtaking the galaxy" problem, and in turn the Catalyst created the reapers as a solution to this problem, harvesting the Leviathans for start and creating the first Reaper -- Harbinger in their shape.

Errr, how exactly did the Catalyst -- a pure software AI  achieve that ? Without an existing army of Reapers ?
How did it harvest the Leviathans and create the first Reaper ? And even in the next few cycles, a small number of Reapers does not seem sufficient to harvest the entire Galaxy. So how did the whole process start up ?

Once you have a few hundred Reapers, it can all go smoothly, but the early cycles seem much harder, especially the very first one.

I have not played the Leviathan DLC, so maybe there is an explanation for this in that.
Please, explain this to me.

Play the leviathan DLC, they had an advance race of syntethics like the geth and the first indoctrination powers. Plus, the catalyst made all his movements in the shadows, Leviathans didn't know about it I guess he attacked them by surprise when a huge army was ready to harvest them.

The Catalyst refers to Harbinger as the first "true" Reaper. This implies that there are, or were, lesser versions. Presumably they were purely synthetic.
