Hey guys-
A good number of game vids in this forum have background music. I just found out that some content owners (aided by Youtube's new content ID system) are cracking down on unlicensed background music in youtube videos.
Although some publishers like it (free advertising for the music), others do not. For example, I just had to remove a video because one of the two rights holders objected to the use of the music in this context.
Maybe many of you knew this, and I am just new to the party, but if not, you may want to check policy of the publisher on this before posting...

This was going on even before the new Content ID system.
I usually try to avoid using licensed music and just use the in-game music in Mass Effect games. It will still get flagged as having licensed content, but the video will still be available although you cannot monetize the video. I don't monetize my videos (and never will) so I do not particularly care at that point.
You could also add music using the YouTube video editor that allows you to add music (and other audio) from publishers that have allowed the music to be used. However, you can only add one track, so longer videos have much less variety of music to choose from.

Some music companies seem to be granting blanket license to use copyrighted music in personal (not-for-profit) videos. Youtube uses content ID to identify the track rather than you adding the track to your video. (You'll see an add pop up next to your video to buy the music). Clever...

And not all of the content claims are legitimate.a_mouse wrote...

In December I had a video of a Collector Adept soloing Benning and all of it had royalty free music. However, the second part was not available in some countries because it allegedly had a song from Sarah McLeod, and the first part had some hits from other random crap. I disputed the claims on both parts, and it was verified for the first part, but not the second. I decided not to bother with an appeal on the second, and I still have the vids set to private and might delete.
In any event, most of the in game vids I make I will just leave the sound as is and not add music. That way you are only getting sounds from Mass Effect, and none of that tends to be blocked in any countries.

Interesting - hadn't thought about the international licensing issue. In any case, I'm a firm believer in asking forgiveness rather than permission. I can always pull the music out of a vid and repost if it comes to that.

I suppose another option is to stick entirely to legal bootlegs, which cannot be identified as commercial music.

Update: On several my videos (containing WMG and UMG owned music) I claimed fair use (since the video is basically structured as a parody of a music video, and the video is not monetized). For now, at least, this seems to have lifted any restrictions...
