Hi
Gathering the Ashes is actually a seperate quest chain to the one where you help Connor.
When you speak to Isolde and Teagan after helping Connor they will hint in the conversation to look for Genetivi (sp) in Denerim, do this and you will be on the right track for the ashes.
Hope this helps, Good Luck.

Brother Genitivi lives in Denerim. Someone at Redcliffe Castle should have mentioned as much.

Well, you can search the house in Denerim, or check the Spoiled Princess Inn Weylon should have mentioned (on the docks area where you first access the Circle Tower).

I usually do redcliffe second and do urn of sacred ashes last. denerim is the largest city in ferelden. You are in redcliffe castle. You probably want to move into a new area. I'd suggest the circle tower.

The man in Genitivi's home should have said something about Lake Calenhad, so you could go there and ask around. Or you could talk to the guy again and listen very carefully to what he says, or you could take a (thorough) look around in Genitivi's home. Any of those options should lead you in the right direction.

Yep I went to the inn at the Lake.. asked the man and he may be hiding something! Already defeated the monsters at the tower

Then return to Genetivi's House in Denerim to confront the man.

Monsters at the tower? If you mean the Circle Tower where you get to dance with Slothy and Uldred at the end of the Broken Circle, that has nothing to do with The Urn of the Sacred Ashes.
Getting ambushed at Lake Calenhad should have tipped you off that the dude in Genitivi's home set you up, and that something is definitely off. Questioning him again should bring things to a head. In any case, tossing Genitivi's home you should find something that puts a new location an the map. It may already be there (a village called Haven).
P.S.: following any of the links is bound to reveal spoilerish information. Caveat emptor.

If you've gone to Lake Calenhad and fought a group of Reavers outside of the tavern, then you need to go back to Genitivi's home and confront Weylon. He will attack you. Once he's dead, search the entire house and you'll find a note about a village named Haven, which will then appear on your map.

Take her along with for a while, just for the fun of talking with her if nothing else. Pay particular attention to the word 'pigeon'...
As long as you have Alistair and Morrigan on your team as well you should have no problems taking Shale along instead of Sten. I wish Shale were as easy to handle as the golems in the tower, though.
By the way, Honnleath is not related to The Urn of the Sacred Ashes. Always worth a visit, though.

Did you search the house in Denerim (Genitiv's home) thoroughly? The back room in particular, the one which the guy there did not want you to look into. I found something there that put the village of Haven on the map. Didn't meet Audrey Parker though. Bummer.

Kolgrim can be slightly easier to deal with if you lure him outside, by pretending that you want to see the risen Andraste. Or you can pretend to go along with his plan. Actually following his plan (instead of just pretending) may be the toughest choice of all, as far as fighting is concerned.
Note: you do not have to fight the guardian in order to get to the urn; the altar can offer an easier way through the wall of flames (which also gives you more XP to boot).
However, if you do what Kolgrim wants then some people are bound to react badly. As I said, that is probably the toughest option as far as fighting is concerned.
P.S.: you do not have to deal with 'Andraste' at all unless you want to. She won't go anywhere either, so she'll still be there later in case you change your mind. Remember, the primary goal of your mission is the urn, not the elimination of dragonkind in Vvardenfell.

You can complete the mission without ever calling 'Andraste' (gong or horn); dancing with her is totally optional.
As regards the flames: there is a way through the flames that does not involve getting burned and drawn into fights, and usually this even gets you more XP than doing the very difficult fight. It has to do with the altar in front of the flames.
P.S.: if you want to go through with Kolgrim's plan then it may be easier to step into the flames and get the fight over with. However, I think this is still harder than simply tearing up Kolgrim and his goons (at least they are fairly normal enemies).
