I think the Dragon Age wiki is even lovelier. ;-) It is more comprehensive and much more accurate.
However, it is usually best not to look up things before you have played them through for the first time. Unless you really get stuck somewhere, of course. Then it's a lifesaver.

I think the books are very good for getting you in the mood. As regards facts, accuracy and completeness, the wiki wins hands-down. It also has walkthroughs for most of the quests.

The books I've seen were like a beefed-up version of the codex, with nice pictures and maps and such. Big on mood and background, but no useful information whatsoever. Some - the official guides, for example - are supposed to contain walkthroughs and step-by-step guides, but those can't be previewed on Amazon, and you can't get any ebook samples either.
Amazon does allow you to look inside The World of Thedas but ever since they clamped down on cross-border ebook buying it's not possible to get ebooks or ebook samples from anywhere except the subsidiary that they deem most suitable for you (amazon.de in my case). Since they found out that I don't actually live in Rome - where my Kindle was registered - I can't even get Italian ebooks anymore.
Judging from the voices here and on the wiki, the books are exactly like the game: superb visuals and artwork, but no one seems to have given a flying meow about all the rest.
You can find many good guides and walkthroughs for free on the Internet, and the wiki is the most accurate and most complete of all. Except for this forum, of course, which has loads of stuff that you won't find anywhere else. Like nightmare solo guides, for example. But it isn't exactly easy to locate any information here...

Depends how any of the treaty missions you have done.
Once all the treaty missions are complete, you will be a good 3/4 of the way through the game. Possibly more.
That said, Orzammar is the longest of the treaty missions.

Well, you've already done one of them, if you battled to the top of the Circle Tower and fought Uldred. If you've also healed Arl Eamon, then you've finished about 40 per cent of the game.
With the Orzammar treaty quest, you need to help either Prince Bhelen or Lord Harrowmont ascend to the throne. They'll both have a series of quests that you need to finish before they can give you troops. Go talk to their representatives in the Diamond Quarter, which you can enter by going right just when you enter the city after exiting the Hall of Heroes. (If you end up in Dust Town, you went the wrong way.) Bhelen's representative is at the Assembly; Harrowmont's representative can either be found at his estate or by exiting the Assembly for the first time.
The other treaty quest involves the Dalish elves and a werewolf curse. More than that I won't say. If you're in Orzammar, you might as well finish that quest first.

Almost all DAO spoilers discussed in a thread in the non-spoiler forum.
That should be worth an achievement.

I did try my best to be subtle about this - this thread is not about spoilers as the title:
