Hi there, I was thinking lately, that I want to use almost every aspect of the game on the creation of my campaign. The material plane uses the world map travel, which I really like, but I was thinking if I should use some OM on some occassions. I know there is a guide to it, which I started reading a while ago, but never finished. All I ask, is from people that worked on OMs to tell me if it's really time wasting, confusing, peace of cake or just a matter of some practise. I ask because I don't really want to get myself into something that will confuse me completely, which is why I gave up on the idea of some custom interfaces. Thanks.
Quick question about OM

For me at least, an overland map can be quite a bit of work and it's easy to run into issues because of the 6 texture limit, but I think it's worthwhile. I'd recommend blocking out the map first using the Terrain color feature for placing locations and terrain borders, then walk it with your character in OM mode and see if that meets your needs. (I actually drew it up om grid paper first.)

It depends on what you want to include on it. If you just want a walkable map, then it's little different than making any other exterior map -- just that you have to use smaller placeables, and make sure everything's visible from the locked camera angle. And you'll use usable placeables for your area transitions, which can be with your own scripts or the ones that it comes with.
If you want to include random encounters of wandering monsters, terrain triggers, and hidden goodies, then it'll be a bit more work. Have you read Obsidian's primer on it?

The documentation I mentioned is the one from Obsidian. So I haven't finished it, no. So all in all, what will take some work is implement all these different terrain, encounters and goodies. One to just travel is just an exterior area with a locked cam. And these encounters, triggers etc. Are we talking about intensive learning on the techniques? Untouchable, or possible to learn with a couple times reading the documentation?

The Obsidian documentation is incomplete. MokahTGS wrote some better documentation, it's out there somewhere.

I created an overland map for a mod I made some years ago. I started to build it knowing absolutely nothing about OM, but it seemed to me really easy to make, apart maybe, like Tchos said, for the encounters.
I never regretted the time spent on this. An interesting OM can be a huge asset to your mod (and it's a lot of fun to place hidden locations and treasures here and there !)
