I managed to get time to see the first episode of season 1, I'm liking it so far. Mcconnaughay as Cohle is brilliant.

Isn't he? I <3 him. I was using one of his quotes in my sig before this site changed. It's still one of my favorite quotes ever:

"Most of the time I was convinced that I’d lost it… There were other times I thought I was mainlining the secret truth of the universe."

I'm writing this fully aware of how stupid I'll look once the last episode airs:

That little tidbit about the art exhibit when Marty was talking to his ex-wife got me intrigued. Odds on one of the paintings being of the Yellow King or something else that's related? My predictions:

1) The climax of ep 8 will involve Marty and/or Rust stumbling upon said (hypothetical) painting, not sure on the circumstances, connecting the dots and racing to stop her ritualistic rape and murder. They'll obviously be just barely too late, since I don't think a happy ending would fit the show. Season ends with Marty and Rust killing the people responsible since they didn't manage to flee the scene, Marty sobbing over his daughter's corpse and possibly committing suicide. Rust narrates the closing scenes, probably something about the f***ed up nature of humanity. Credits.

2) Maggie's dad is one of the bastards that Papa Tuttle sired way back when and is one of the hooded men on the tape. Surname isn't Tuttle or Childress so Rust and Marty don't figure it out until it's too late. Maybe they don't ever figure it out, and only the audience gets the reveal. Could do something like having him pop up briefly in the beginning of the episode, simply so that the audience gets a reminder of who he is and what he looks like. Then at the end, after a grief-stricken Marty offs himself, have a little flashback as Rust narrates to the actual night the snuff video was made. The men remove their hoods one at a time when the camera has stopped rolling after the video from ep 7 was shot. The last one just before the end credits is the father-in-law.

I've given this way too much thought.

I can see why people would be disappointed in the finale, but I really enjoyed it. The set design for Carcosa was brilliant and the final scene was really touching.

Thoroughly enjoyed the finale, even with the unresolved nature of some parts of the case. Kinda curious as to what those old ruins were - was that a sugar plantation, or some kind of old slave trading port?

We think it was constructed from the film because we'd never seen it before.

A plantation wouldn't have been built out of that thick concrete.

The dome made me think of a church....

A plantation certainly not, but a sugar/ tobacco/ cotton mill? Quite possibly. The raw sugar cane needs processing, storing away from the rain and damp, the machinery to process it needs a solid base and to be anchored to the floor or walls, needs protection from the elements as well. Even without large scale mechanisation in the South.

And, given it's proximity to the Old house, and out houses, it looks like the ruins of an old sugar plantation complete with a mill for processing and subsequent exporting of goods. Which would explain why elements of the family rumoured to be associated with the Yellow king, are well situated given their dominant ownership of land within the South as plantation owners, post Civil War.

And that's enough geeky economic history for today people, tune in next time for more random, and usually pointless, information.

The final episode kind of blew my mind, and I loved the end where Marty wheels into Rusts room to check on him. They're so cute.

What a fantastic show/season this was. Top notch stuff all around. Loved the finale, even if it will kind of suck to not see any more of Marty and Rust. They killed it.

Will be really interesting to see how they follow up this season and who they're able to get for the leads.

I've loved the final episode and it was pretty much what I've assumed after last week, that Cohle/Hart wouldn't have the powers to dismantle the whole conspiracy. For me the biggest twist was they being alive at the end, when Cohle entered Carcosa (lord what a creepy place) I said to my girlfriend "well, he's dead". The positive note which the season ended was refreshing since in recent times the trend is "negative endings with something to think about" in most series and True Detective ended with a "positive ending with something to think about it".

The idea of the Yellow King being a cosmic god/demon represented as the altar in Carcosa and not a person was awesome too.

Nic Pizzolatto, creator of True Detective gave a great interview to Entertainment Weekly, it can be read here: http://popwatch.ew.c...cohle-and-hart/

This is particularly interesting:

What’s the update on season two?

I am still fleshing it out. The basic idea: Hard women, bad men, and the secret occult history of the U.S. transportation system. I was well on my way in the writing but there’s been a lot noise and work around the end of the first season that got in the way.

Is it true that you’ve retained the literary rights to Cohle and Hart?

I do. So maybe you will see Cohle and Hart novels down the road after Hollywood kicks me out. Always a possibility.

Should have posted this two days ago.

OK, so we appear to have a female character that's more prominent in the show, more city-scape, AND a June 21st premiere date (so the show's coming sooner than we think).

Farrell's mustache is epic.

In fact, he looks like someone...

To me he looked like Ian McShane's iteration of Al Swearengen from Deadwood

Also, Collin Farrel? Meh.

I can't believe I had to go digging to find this thread again.

So season 2 just started, thoughts?

I'm liking it so far, but it's far, far too early to tell how it'll compare to S1 in the end. It does feel different, but there's a familiarity in how wonderfully bleak and depressing the general tone is, which is something I liked about S1. Also think Farrell is great in his role, with Vaughn also being surprisingly enjoyable.

I tend to avoid most things with Colin Farrell. I'll still give this a chance, but I'm not all that excited about it.

The last one made me tear up a bit...

So far I've been able to look past his Vince Vaughniness, but there were a couple of moments when I had Wedding Crashers flashbacks.  I think I'll get used to it.  He was good in the first episode for sure.

It's definitely maintaining the tone.  All of the characters are deeply flawed and we've only just met them, so I'm sure we'll get a more in depth look at their tortured psyches as the season unfolds.

Took me a little longer to see how things fit together this season.  The first season laid out the general premise pretty clearly at the outset.  But it all came together by the end of the episode.  Looks promising.  Takes a little bit out of the sting of the GoT finale to have this to watch on Sunday nights now.

I liked the first episode, and there's enough True Detectiveness that it felt familiar despite having all new setting and characters. The initial opening shot of the pink ribbons which is still mysterious-  the vivid long-range visuals with negative space highlighted- the philosophical catch phrases and promise of weirdness- the bleak, terribly flawed characters. All good.

I do see what the critics were saying that there are too many POV characters, and there's no Marty to play the everyman and lighten the tone a little. I thought Colin Farrell was especially good, and Vince Vaughan a little too serious and blank. Also the female cop is too serious. She could've easily been the Marty but everyone's trying to be Cohle, which I saw one critic point out.

I thought ep 1 was really good. Slow start, though. But season 1 started slow too, so I guess its all good. Colin Farrell is doing a very good job so far. The guy is actually a damn good actor, but he seems to suffer from having a bad agent.

Ah. Season 2 is out? Good. Colin Farrell's acting has never been something to write stories about which made me weary, but like how Lars Von Trier managed to make something out of Shia Le Beof in Nymphomaniac, I'm going to assume that the quality of True Detective so far will heighten his performance if anything.

Plus, I need something new to watch now :)
