After watching the first episode last Sunday, I'm quite pleased with the show. The two main characters were really intriguing and they were exceptionally well-cast. The first episode was definitely one of those set-up episodes, but I didn't mind because the interactions between the two detectives was done pretty well and the story kept me hook. The dialogue is especially engaging.

Another thing that I like about this series is that it's an anthology. That means that every season is a new story,so you don't have to go through, say, five seasons to know the whole story if you don't want to. I don't mind watching multi-seasononal stories, but it's good that True Detective doesn't require a certain level of dedication for those that don't have the time.

I haven't seen it.I don't get HBO.

I might get to watch videos of it someday.

I do love the homicide detective genre so I do have hopes the show will be a hit.

There are places that stream it completely for free, like this site right here.

Of course, you'll get some porn ad pop-ups, but you can just exit out of those.

Anywho, I can't wait for tonight's episode. I'm going to start watching it right now.

HBO series are famous for blood and sex. GoT and Rome for example. Do they have the unnecessary sex scenes (or better be called soft porn) included in this series too or they have cut the crap in this one?

Define unnecessary sex scenes because GoT didn't have any.

Also, I gotta say that this series is superb in developing the two main characters. I'm also starting to feel bad for Audrey, who seems to suspect that her husband is cheating on her. Sucks that Marty had to deal with her idiotic dad.

I like this series so far, mostly because it is set in my home state. (The writer also graduated from the MFA program of my first alma mater.) The accents can be a little exaggerated at times, but so far it's not un-listenable. Actors do have a really hard time with Louisiana accents, especially since there are so many, and nothing like the "traditional" southern accent. It's shot on location, and so it looks great, very authentic.

The acting by MM and WH is amazing, and obviously they don't have to fake their accents, so it's perfect. The writing, however, is "okay"; my friend and I were kind of chuckling at some of the long monologues and just how very stylized the dialogue is in general. (Luckily the actors pull it off.) It takes place in 1995, but seems to think it's 1950, considering the portrayal of women in the series. It doesn't have a lot to offer female fans; main female characters so far are the sad housewife and the mistress... cliche stuff.

Perhaps they'll add an Olivia Benson type at some point. It isn't the 1950's as you said. But Louisiana is a conservative state.

That's what I think is the reason.

By the way, have you gotten to Episode 2 yet? Any thoughts on it so far?

What was it that Cohle said about mainlining the truth of the universe? I had hoped I'd remember that; it was brilliant. Image IPB

Edit: Found it, and added it to my sig.

It's hard to remember; I was 15 in 1995, but it still seems a little too cliche for me. It's nice that the two "contemporary" detectives are black. And all the cops from 95 are white guys... who very much resemble typical La cops LOL Just a-holes in general.

Oh, and the "anti-Christian" crime thing with the preacher... very, VERY authentic.

And the preacher being related to the governor or something... also very, very, VERY Louisiana. This state is the pinnacle of the Good Ole Boy network.

I suppose you might know more about this stuff than I do. Glad that the show is pretty authentic, even if that means a profound lack of female characters that aren't house-wives or mistresses.

My sibling directed all of the scenery shots and helicopter shots for the pilot episode (and likely a lot of the scenery/chopper shots to be used throughout the season), but by the time HBO ordered more episodes she was working full time on S.H.I.E.L.D.

Well your sibling did a great job. I loved all the wide open shots of the landscape and towns. It really grounds the setting of the story.

Going to watch the fourth episode soon (which I didn't when it aired). I'll give my thoughts on it soon.

I'll just say the last 10 minutes of the fourth episode are INTENSE.

It most certainly was. The way the camera swerved around and kept moving was a very nice touch. I really liked how the redneck riders kept losing their cool while Cohle kept saying basically the same thing: to calm the **** down. Then things continually keep spiraling out of control. It happens so fast, the the situation keeps on getting bigger. Overall, really well-done.

It was even better than the third episode's ending.

The whole sequence works so well that I totally forgot Cohle is alive in 2012 and was uneasy something would happen with him in the escape.

The show gives the impression that the modern detectives are looking at Cohle as a suspect, but I think the twist will be that Hart is the real suspect.

Basically my reaction if this were to happen.

Cohle is nasty, he's still working on the case and used the two detectives to get their files. It's like Hart said:  "If you talked to Cohle, you weren't looking into him - he was looking into you."

I would be shocked if Cohle is the Yellow King, for me it's obvious he's working non-stop on the case since 2002 when he got "off the grid".

And what a great actor Matthew McConaughey turned out to be in the recent times, True Detective is just the crown jewel. I don't think today there's any other actor in his same level.
