It appears that the inventory limit is 50 items. Is there also a maximum limit on the number of items in the storage chest? If so, how can you tell how many items are currently stored?

You can find vendors that sell backpacks, increasing your groups' inventory space by 10 each time. Like caradoc2000 said, there doesn't seem to be a limit.
