Hi guys, I recently upgraded to windows 7 64 bit service pack 1 and hadn't played ME1 for a while and thought I'd go for another play through, but every time I try to install the game now I get the following message:

Installation Cancelled

The installation of Mass Effect has been cancelled, to run the installer again, please run Setup.

I've tried lots of fixes, running the installer as administrator, making sure the compatibility mode is set to windows XP service pack 2, installing the game with my firewall switched off, but nothing seems to work. I've installed the game twice before on my old system, so this would be my third install, but there's nothing else I can think and wondered if anyone had come across this problem and managed to fix it.

I know you can run ME1 on windows 7 64 bit, because I know others who have had success, but none of them with this actual problem.

If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it.

Hi guys, I think I've managed to resolve the issue.

I copied the autorun.exe and the data files onto my desktop from the installation disc and then removed the disc and ran the setup from my desktop. Now after installing the ME1 patch 1.02 the game is running fine.

Sorry if anyone was going to reply, but at least there's other solution to try now, if anyone else should encounter this problem.

Thanks for posting back with your solution. I'm about to try installing the game on Windows 81. x64, so hopefully this will help me if I run into trouble.

No worries, hopefully you won't run into any problems. Also I forgot to say, you might have to run the game as administrator the first time you play, but after that it should be fine.

Hmm odd. Never had an issue installing with Win7/8/8.1 64bit versions.
