I've only been playing a short while, and although I mostly only play gold pugs, once in a blue moon I strap on my best equipment and consumables and enter a platinum game.

The thing is, for what little amount of times I've even played platinum, Firebase Rio was a common map and the tactic was the same: stay back where all the carts are and hold the fort in the furthest cart with the ammo box when the **** hits the fan.

I entered a lobby set to Reapers, Firebase Rio, Platinum, with a lv. 19 or so Volus Sentinel and a lv. 17 Vorcha Sentinel. Maybe the fact that they didn't even bother to level up to 20 should've been enough of a red flag, but I figured they were a duo and had enough confidence in themselves to do it anyway, so I said why not.

Anyway, we wiped at wave 8, which was unfortunate, since we were doing surprisingly well. I say surprising because these things usually end up failing, which is something I wanted to ask about as well. What's your experience, if any, of this tactic? Have you seen or tried it before, and if so, what do you think about it?

With certain builds, and combos it can be easy, but the thing is that it is hard if you screw up because you are already backed into a corner,

most people assume you can just put any old team together and win easily, most people are wrong, unless you have an elite player, but that makes any map easy

the draw is that most creatures can't sync you when you are in the box beside the ammo crate, but they will still kill you pretty easily, and you can't get away once you are inside

I agree. I suppose that's why I see a lot of the Volus sentinels. He'll stand in the box and spam that shield boosting ability while the others do all the dirty work. The thing is, if the Volus goes down, things start to go downhill really fast, and it's difficult to recover from it.

Do you know which creatures can sync kill you? I'm pretty sure that I've seen somone get grabbed by the banshee while in the box, but maybe it's because they were standing to close to the edge...

the "box of shame" as it's referred to around here, offers you limited protection from banshee sync kills. but as you mentioned, if u stand too close to the outer edge she can still grab you.

BSN hasn't been great about defining cheating in the past. Conflicts of interest and all that.

What does BSN have to do with anything? It's the developers decision to accept a hiccup as clever use of game mechanics or to simply label it as outright cheating.

Lol it's the only way I play Rio.

Imo, its the best intro to platinum mode, Rio/Reapers, Yes, Hide back in the box, it's not really cheating since you can still get r@ped inside the box, since they can still hit you ... and phantoms can run inside it and whatnot, .... Past wave 7 it turns to hell no matter what, and you need a good team to pass that, and things get even rougher when you get a upload objective in the middle

IF you stand beside the ammo box, not in front of it, two people can be kept safe from every sync kill except phantoms, the regular melees will still destroy anybody inside, but they won't be sync killed, scions occasionally clip into the box and can sync kill you if they do,

In my experience standing in the box is complete suicide as any sync kill unit's melee is still devastating when you can't move out of the way, and if you have the raw dps to kill them that fast you don't need the box

Rio can be an OK map if players simply hold the north end of the ship at the start of each wave then push steadily to the middle without letting them spawn behind them, its only annoying when people try to stay in the damn box all game long.

Unfortunately, preset pug lobbys tend to run straight into the crate, best to quit 'em before wasting consumables in such a boring game.

Box of shame as a panic room you hope never to use is fine, as a fortress it sucks.

Is platinum farming in the box of shame still a thing? I thought it got replaced by giant LZ farming after the portable box geth juggernaut was released.

I was asking about which creatures can sync kill you while you're in the box, but thanks for the info anyway.

Now I know that it's called the box of shame, which seems to be a very fitting name.

Giant Reapers is a better farm setup IMO...so simple, easier objectives.

Oh yes. I actually don't see too many Giant farmers in relation to Rio campers. I guess it's because they can easily get grabbed on Giant if a Banshee teleports through the wall.

The Three Balls of Shame™ are better than the box of shame, but Banshees can still get you there.
