The biggest problem is:
The small world. You are literally stuck in one small city and a cliff-face the entire game.
On a related matter - it suffers from the most recycled areas of any game ever. There is one cave in the mountain, and one underground dungeon in the city. Every time you enter a "new" place, you just enter on a different side of the same area.
Then you have the art style. The completely changed how everything looks. Darkspawn look like clowns. Qunari are cool though. Women in the game look like they were created by 9 year old boys. Giant fake boobs everywhere. Lots of emo anime style people too.
Lastly, the combat system is this fake hack 'n slash mess, filled with teleporting and exploding enemies. It is not bad otherwise.
That said, I would still recommend playing it. The story is quite good. Some funny bits, some well written characters (not all of them), and a generally fun experience. It may not be as good as Origins, but it is an okay game by itself.
The biggest reason - the story - is that it carries over to the 3rd game. Not much of Origins, other than the lore, will be of consequence. Varric's story is very involved and you see a couple of characters carry over.

Here's the changes:
1) The art style is changed. It's a fair bit more stylized than DAO, but It does not, as damoose suggested, feature "giant fake boobs everywhere" and "emo anime style people." The women are no bustier than in Origins, and there's exactly one character who may fit the description of being "anime style," if only because anime loves pretty white-haired people. The darkspawn did change in appearance and not everyone likes the change.
2) The combat changed a fair bit. Fights tend to consist of waves of cheap enemies coming at you and there's more reliance on combos that you can only pull off with more than one party member. Finishing moves for melee characters are out, but if you do a huge amount of damage to someone, they basically explode.
3) The game is, as damoose said, limited to one city, plus a few environments on the outskirts. There is a lot of recycling in maps, though there is more than one cave and one underground dungeon.
4) There's no more party camp, and you don't talk to companions whenever you want to. Finishing quests unlocks new conversations with them, and each companion has a "home" you go to when you want to talk.
5) The story is divisive. Unlike DAO, you're not working towards a big end-goal, ie. defeating the Blight. You're just a guy (or girl) trying to make his way in the world and you end up taking on some major villains in the process.
My suggestion is to at least try it. DA2 is extremely cheap right now, and I've heard many people say they were turned off by the bad reviews but ended up enjoying the game after they tried it.

I think the game is worth it, but it has a lot of problems, and it's nowhere near as good as Origins.

The dlc's are good and I would go as far to say they're better than the main game.

Depends on your class, level of skill and the difficulty setting. Keep in mind that damage is king in DA2; you can't rely on heal potions and rezzes like you could in DAO, as they have a cooldown. But you don't really need them all that much if you can dish out major damage.
Most battles are easy to moderate difficulty, but there are a few really tough battles sprinkled throughout the game (particularly the end boss fight at Act 1), so I suggest making multiple saves so you can backtrack if need be.

In DA2 the jumps seems much more dramatic. So, Easy is 'plough effortlessly through enemies like a freight train' while Nightmare truly lives up to its name.

If you've found this in a bargain bin for $10, it's not a bad purchase. If you bought the Collector's Edition for $80, you might have a higher bar set and more likely to disappoint.
It's hard to calculate if the game is worth it to you when you could be paying different amounts... if that makes sense?

The story, as is with most Bioware games, is awesome. If you play for that, you can hopefully look past the more obvious flaws and aggravations like the over-reuse of every area of the same game. There are like 10 or so actual areas that are slightly reskinned and used to death, along with pooly placed mostly useless loot. The combat system is supposed to be more refined, but is just like wave after wave of uninteresting opponents. The Act II (especially) & III boss fights were done very well IMO.
[Rant]
Never mind the in-your-face "are you sure your not gay?" style of romance in the game. She-male in the brothel? Really...? Disgusting. Yes I said it. I feel it was very non-inclusive of Bioware to leave out the homophobe RP element. Maybe my Hawke really doesn't appreciate Anders' ridiculous attitude after turn him down? If you roleplay a straight male the romance options were 2nd poorest aspect of this game. Your options are either a underdeveloped elf girl with pooly designed body, or a dirty pirate that will sleep with others even if in a relationship with you -- but it's okay because you can join too - /vomit. If you get to that encounter without her in your party, the NPC will come on to you anyway -- because apparently the beard just screams take me dude, right here on the mountain shrine (among the graves), because that's where it happens in movies.
In my one playthrough, I had 3 unsolicited direct passes made at me by guys, Anders', Zevran, and a Gigalo; and 2 indirect passes (Isabella & Zevran again IIRC) 4-1! Truly, I did not realize that the facial hair and blood stain on the face was such a turn on for the dudes. I get it BW, you support the LGBT community. Good for you. Can I please have the 'I'm not gay' check box in the game play options? You can avoid excessive gore with a checkbox, why not avoid raging gay? Having the "gay option" with characters doesn't bother me so much, but getting lip from an NPC for declining an unsolicited gay advance, and getting hit on repeatedly by guys instead of girls makes me like the game a lot less. This was quite the jump from DA:O, which I thought was handled a lot better.
What's the evolution gonna be in DA:I? Craftable Astroglide potions? Dude on dude rapes with sleep hexes? Will there be a "back door flap" for my plate armor, for those times when male NPCs just can't wait to get me back to camp? Farm animal option in the brothel? (Don't forget your velco gauntlets amirite?) SMH Bioware...
[/Rant]
Now that I've gotten that off my chest, the story does utilize a lot of uncommon elements that make it extra interesting -- primarily dealing with family dynamics. Several large arcs in the story deal directly with parents, or parental figures, siblings, orphaning -- it's quite a grown-up story in that regard. The story builds friendships and betrayals very effectively, particularly from act II through to the explosive ending. For me, it was very good at eliciting genuine emotional reactions, rather than the typical checklist of -- Hero rising, got the girl, mortal danger, boss defeated. Those things are in there too, but are well framed in the larger context of developing your character over the course of several years.

Gay or straight, male or female, you get exactly the same romance choices.

No. No you can't. You can grow up and accept the fact that Bioware games include gay characters - you know, just like the real world - or you can have a tantrum and not play them.

Wow. Just wow. BSN's had some pretty stupid, hysterical, bigotted kick-back against the same-sex romance aspects of DA2, but this one is particularly classy.
I really hope you're a troll. Because if not, then you're an utter idiot.

That is the exact same argument as saying "Gay or straight, male or female, everyone gets exactly the same rights in states that only have traditional marriage." See what I did there? It's not the same choices, just as it's not the same rights.

I accept the fact that Bioware games include gay characters. Could care less really. What I don't accept is it being shoved in my face over and over in every play through. *Every* gay character, save Fenris, hits on me at some point. That's a design choice, not a roleplaying element.

Did that bother you? Good. Because I'm irritated with the design direction LI are taking. Disagreeing with how the LI were setup isn't bigotted. There's no name calling (except by you), or hate speech in what I said. I'm not pretending to speak for any particular group of gamers either. However, I personally don't think the parade route needs to roll through my office in order to satisfy the roleplaying desires of another group.
LGBT are the first and lousest group to decry a game with only straight male/female romance options as "pandering, inconsiderate, and uninclusive". Perhaps, that's a correct assumption. However, they are also the first group to try an shout down anyone that disagrees with how far things get taken, attempting to silence anyone that doesn't agree with them by framing opposition with words like like troll, bigot, and homophobe. I'm neither, and I'm not ashamed to say out loud (or in this case, write), that as some point, a line should be drawn. For me, DA2 crossed that line quite bit with repeatedly asking me to have gay romances/sex, and not really asking at all for straight romances. Maybe that experience would have been different if I had rolled a female character, since two of the "too horny to hide it" characters were guys, and Isabella's offer was very indirect. However, I'm not a woman, and I don't roll women in RPGs. So, it came across incredibly strongly to the point of being ham-handed and obviously forced.
The checkbox was made a little dramatic to emphasis a point. Just as you are able to choose the race, hair style, skin color, etc -- you should be able to choose the orientation of your character at creation (Straight, Gay, Bi, Chaste). Thus putting you down any particular dialog trees you want from the start, (some, all, or no) romances, exactly the same as it would if you chose a dwarf or elf.
If anyone calls that bigotted, then they are just as narrowminded as someone who calls for gay LI removal. The need for LGBT to be universally accepted in life doesn't need to happen through the game time of every person that wants to pick up a good RPG. The onus is on Bioware to create a system that makes gamers happy. I fail to see why just cutting to the chase and allowing sexual orientation as a customizable feature to your character should be a problem for any reasonable, moderate person. So, unless you are striaght and "OMG gay is the evil", or gay and "OMG, every player needs a gay fling", what exactly is your problem?
You insulted me, alluded to me being immature, made every effort to bait my anger, and are asking if I'm a troll? <_<

No it isn't.
The 'everyone has the same rights to marry in states with traditional marriage' argument is bogus because those rights cater to the desires of straight people and not to gay people. So one group is being catered for and the other is not.
In DA2, there are 4 potential love interests, two male and two female. And all of them will happily have a romance with you, whether you are a man or woman. That isn't one group being catered for and the other not - that's both groups being catered for equally. Which you apparently have a problem with...

You say you don't have an issue with gay characters. But that is belied by the fact that you are insulted/offended by male characters hitting on you. Just say no if you don't want a gay fling. What's the big deal? Your reaction is the equivalent of me being offended every time a female character flirted with a male character of mine in an RPG. Which, I hope we can agree, would be petty and silly of me. But it is equally petty and silly of you to be offended in this situation.
Did that bother you? Good.
See, it's comments like that that made me think you were a troll...
Disagreeing with how the LI were setup isn't bigotted.
Not unless you are disagreeing because of your bigotry. Which is what you seem to be doing.
There's no name calling (except by you), or hate speech in what I said.
To quote from your first post: "I feel it was very non-inclusive of Bioware to leave out the homophobe RP element." Which is the equivalent of saying "I feel it was very non-inclusive of Bioware to leave out the racist RP element." Were you annoyed that there were no racist rebuttals when Isabela hit on you? Or how about the fact that only 1 of the 6 people who you can possibly have sex with is a white human? Isn't that Bioware shoving it's 'anti-racist PC agenda' down your throat?
Can you even see the comparison here? Bioware won't give you options to be homophobic for the same reasons they won't give you options to be racist.
LGBT are the first and lousest group to decry a game with only straight male/female romance options as "pandering, inconsiderate, and uninclusive".
Would you describe an RPG (whose point is that you build your own character) like that if it had only gay options?
...attempting to silence anyone that doesn't agree with them by framing opposition with words like like troll, bigot, and homophobe. I'm neither,
Are you sure about that?
Really? I'm not just saying this because I want to insult you. But you literally just said that being hit on by male characters in a video game is the first step on a slippery slope to getting raped by male characters, or having sex with animals. I appreciate you might be exaggerating for the sake of humour, but even so the attitude that displays is highly homophobic.
Well, quite apart from the fact that it is an added complication for the game's developers, the effect of this would, of course, would be to blank out or silence any gay characters from the game. What you want, in effect, is a world where gay characters are non-existent, or, at best, completely silent. Really, are you sure you're not homophobic?
You insulted me, alluded to me being immature, made every effort to bait my anger, and are asking if I'm a troll? <_<
I did insult you, and perhaps that was unworthy. But really, your first post is highly infammatory and extremely bigotted. I am not using these words simply to insult you - I mean them genuinely. From your second post it is clear you can put forward a case which is at least cool in its tone, but that does not make your ideas any more rational. 'Homophobic' is not just an insult I throw around indiscriminately. And I sincerely suggest a little bit of introspection if you think it doesn't apply to you.
