The CE can take revenge right there in the origin, and so they don't see Vaughan's face popping up all the time throughout the game.

The HN has to wait a long time, and for them the arms are not only a reminder of what happened - they are also a constant reminder of what they have yet to do, which is to run Howe through with the sword. That makes for a difference in impact.

And city elves AREN'T constantly reminded of home or the tragedy suffered there every time they look at or visit Denerim? Try to go home only to learn from the guard that the gates have been locked for a purge (or a legal massacre) under orders from the new Arl of Denerim appointed by Regent Loghain? And for the rest of the game you feel helpless because you know your people are being slaughtered and there's nothing you can do? You don't even know who's dead or alive. Heck, if female, you can have an item your inventory (Nelaros' wedding ring) as a reminder of what happened (injustice and slaughter of innocents) and what's happening again.

City Elves also have reason to take revenge on Howe, can learn of why pretty early in the game, and are powerless to take vengeance until the end like the Human Nobles.

'Best' and 'most tied to the plot' seem like awfully fuzzy, abstract, subjective things to be arguing about.

I'm a big fan of the City Elf origin - and the Human Noble one, fwiw - but I can never seem to get my elves' faces to look any good. So I've played through the CE origin like eleventy billion times, but almost every time I get to Ostagar, I see my elves' faces in different light and instantly hate them, back to the drawing board to reroll. There's something about structure that's incredibly difficult to tune for me; almost all my elves have a nasty case of horseface, and those that don't have tiny scrunched-up faces that look even goofier.

Only once did I ever make an elf face that I actually like. Finished the game with her, too...aaaaaand of course I don't have that save anymore.

haha.. almost the same case with me too (I've actually finished an elf playthrough at least). I think elves would have been more popular if they didn't make their appearance options so bad. Females are better than males by far though. It's the males with the narrow horseface. Not sure what's worse. DAO or DA2, where they started looking like anteaters instead.

The other origins are worth playing. But if it weren't for them I'd only play humans too because I'm vain and I don't like having pointy ears or being an oompa loompa.

My favorite is the city elf second Human Noble. This is one of the reasons I keep picking Alistair for king. The city Elf story gave me chills.

In Skyrim I played nearly all the races except the wood elf and the kijatt and the argonian. I could not relate to the last two and the wood elf didn't interest me as I played the high and dark elf. Elf bored by that time. I enjoyed all of them and found them all to be fun. But I think the difference here is that there feels like there is no benefit to playing anything but a human noble because my story just sort of ends. I don't like that. I like having the ending where it feels like there is closure beyond some crappy slide. That's a cheapass ending that I don't like. I don't know. I like being able to marry Alistair. I find it manipulative that I cannot unless I do what they want in game to achieve that goal. That's crappy role playing. It's not true roleplaying. In skyrim I can marry whomever I want. I can even make my own followers which I did. And I did marry them. I lived with them on a lush estate with mages and warriors watching over my land. Here, I have to be a human noble to enjoy that aspect of the game which frankly is a very fun aspect for me. Give my elf a nice marriage and I'll go for it. Heck, I even have to make Alistair the king just to get some nice dialogue from him. No freaking closure. What is wrong with these people at BW that they cannot comprehend the import of closure? Closure is a GOOD thing. People want it. They seek it out. It's a driving force in life and even in great literature. But they have yet to comprehend this in any of their games. *sigh*

I tried so hard one time, but I just couldn't do it. Creating male characters was fun, too, but the voice acting made me sad.  :(  I really like the voice acting for Fem Hawke, so everything was okay.  :D

I actually forced myself to play a male Hawke because mmm that voice. I spent a lot of time in Lothering chantry in origins just to listen to ser Bryant talking, and try to forget that Vaughan is the same guy.

God I just love Skyrim. I just started playing DAO again because of the mods. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't. Skyrim did allow me total freedom.

Although I like whole whole royal wedding thing, I mean what girl doesn't want to marry her prince charming ;)

I actually prefer being with Alistair as an elf, it so cute and I think he is like his father a bit and has a soft spot for elves.

I have a mod that lets me marry him regardless of race or class sooo:) And if I choose not to go king route I always head cannon them marrying.

He goes to the keeper and asks  to give his girl a  bonding ceremony and surprises her with a trinket he made from his first hunt, helped by a few males in her clan *sigh*

I really like elves, but I just can't seem to make pretty female elves, so I tend to stay in the human origin. Also I like to have my cousland become queen, but recently, she's been getting together with Ser Gilmore(Mod)

Here's a slightly unusual reason for choosing human instead of elf...

A while back I replayed the origin for Githany, an abandoned attempt at making a Sith apprentice with focus on overwhelming firepower (spell progression: Flame Blast + Mind Blast, Fireball, Walking Bomb). I was completely floored by her ability to blaze through the levels in record time, obliterating the opposition without breaking her stride... Then I realised that the Vestments of the Seer, the Sash of Forbidden Secrets and the High Regard of House Dace probably had a lot to do with that.

So I decided to try a character without the racial benefits of the elves and without the über gear from DLC, and thus was born the human mage Empyrea - a mere mortal who is powerful not because of boons but because she knows how to use fire magic to maximum effect. 32 minutes to Ostagar, 40 minutes from there to the end of the Korcari Wilds mission (nightmare solo).

Starting stats for elven Sonea with DLC kit and human Empyrea without (all points piled into magic, as usual):

I've played a Human Noble more times than I can count, and only once have I played an Elf Mage.

I have the same problem and in ME3 MP. Playing as a human is more appealing than other races/species. The only origin I love is the human mage otherwise I'd go human noble. The other origin stories do seem like fun but I never continue past ostagar an only played them for the achievements. Afterwards they be deleted.

I'm still trying to choose which one I want to play as. I'm leaning towards Human Noble though.

its the same with me OP
I really wanted to try out the other origins but except Human Noble I didn't like any of them (Human mage was ok I guess) They never went past Ostagar

I suppose it also has something to do with appearence Elves are way too thin and dwarves too small in my opinion

there is also too much baggage with either of those races and origin stories and the reasons for joining are really lacking in most of those stories

the main story also flows much better with Arl Howe, the landsmeet etc.

I also like how the resolution of the origin story comes at the end with the Landsmeet and finishing howe you can't do it before and its a much bigger pay off

than the others

(example Mage circle story already ends with the mage tower stuff and the dwarven stories with visitng Orzammar again you can do those whenever you want after Lothering)

I will try it again now with DA:I with playing as a Qunari this time hopefully it will work

if not I will probably pick Human again

I ended up choosing Human Noble. The whole thing with Howe is just too good to pass up. :D

Coming back to the topic, I do agree that Human Noble feels the most tied to the main plot. Even if a City Elf spares Vaughn for his deal, Vaughn isn't an active agent in the plot anymore after the City Elf Origin while Rendon Howe still is and the Human Noble one.

I really hate to be THAT guy, but I really do not understand the popularity of the human noble origin.

The origin story itself is cliched and incredibly twee. Poignant, perhaps, but I don't think that's particularly lacking in several other origins.

It does add an element of satisfaction to the Howe plot, but I don't think it was played up enough to be a really good pay-off to that.

Marrying the monarch seems a weird game option, since I find it ludicrous that a Landsmeet would be happy for their supposedly impartial adjudicator to simply crown themselves co-ruler. Really? No-one objects at all to such a blatant power-grab?

There's also the fact that Duncan can quite easily come out of the origin story looking like quite a... well... let's say 'swine' for the sake of the filth filter.

The best thing the HN has to offer as far as I can see is early Dog recruitment.

I do get the fact that people might want to play AS a human (because they don't want to look like pointy-eared wimps or be short and fat), but still, the origin story itself is rather underwhelming compared to the others.

Only on BSN would story that ends with a character finding one's entire household (including a small child) either slaughtered in their beds or bleeding to death on the floor be described as "twee".
