I don't think the design of genlocks were perfect in DAO but Iiked them much more than the legacy version. The genlock emissary bothered me though as dwarves can't wield magic it broke immersion for me a little.

The darkspawn in DA:O creeped me out, which is a good thing. The darkspawn in DA2, not so much, they just made me wonder why they looked so different. If they do redesign them, I would want them to go back to what they looked like in DA:O, but a more polished version like others in this thread have suggested. If they look more like they did in DA2, oh well, that's something I can get over.

Hopefully. Although I am normally against redesigns of classic enemies/races, I can let my disdain slide in regards to the horribly generic, spiked, pasty Skeletor wannabes that Dragon Age II had the audacity to call Darkspawn.

just no.

I'll take DAO's pseudo-orcs over DA2's putties any day.

I'd be way more down for putty darkspawn IF we could colour code our companions and their armor into combinations of red, white, blue, black, green, yellow and pink.

Dwarves cannot connect to the Fade, which is why they cannot use magic.

However, it has been confirmed that the Darkspawn do not draw their magical power from the Fade, but instead from the power of the Taint itself. So genlocks could wield magic.

As I wrote in my previous post, I think they should have gone more "horror" with the darkspawn to escape the generic "orc/goblin" look.  Matt Rhodes was absolutely right in his perspective on the darkspawn in DAO.  The image below on the left is what I hope they steer more closely to in DAI because the image is far more disturbing, far more evocative, and far less than traditional "bad-race" images in most high/popular fantasy:

As an aside, I think the earlier designs for Flemeth were far more interesting than what they ended up (and I actually liked the redesigned Flemeth, even if it was DRASTICALLY different from the character we meet in DAO.

Agreed.

Especially those dress designs for Flemeth. Those were terrific. I don't know why they went with weird hair horns and sexy leather.

Flemeth looked like a final fantasy character tbh

The darkspawn in DA2 were way too...clean looking, while the DAO versions looked all gross and gritty. So yeah, I'm in favour of going back to the nasty gritty versions since they are corrupted elves/humans and dwarves.

I want them to be menacing and scary again. Maybe it was the engine and not the design, I'm not sure but DA:O felt like a dark fantasy and 2 felt over processed.

I like the look of the darkspawn from DAO.

The darkspawn in DA2 look like they came out of a cartoon.

I hope so. I want them to go back to the Origins look. But with the polish  of Frostbite 3.

Since it seems that they're going to stick to something closer to the DA2 darkspawn, there are some elements in this concept art like. Big, lidless bloodshot eyes, gaping black maw...

I'd even go one step further and go into full body mutilations, grafting weapons and pieces of armor to their bodies in a kind of twisted homage to their Magister forebearers.

I would rather we not see darkspawn at all in DA:I. They are terrible enemies.

Darkspawn will probably get a cel-shaded Walking Dead style look because that's what's "in" right now.

*Joke disclaimer*

I'm sure we will see them, even if only briefly. Perhaps we have to go into the Deep Roads for something, or perhaps we will pass by a DR opening on our random travels somewhere. Hell, even in Asunder there is a minor encounter with darkspawn.

What we need is to not be facing the skeleton putty squad from DA2. If they could give us a closer look to the DAO hurlocks and an ogre that had serious dental jaw surgery. I'd be thrilled. Really.

What are your thoughts on the previous redesign and do you think there will or should be another one?

I have to say every time I see the part with the Hurlock in the above picture I chuckle quite a bit because all I can think about are the Goombas from the Mario Brothers live action movie.  That being said, I think the idea of the change for DA 2 was a good one, but the execution was a bit poor.  Genlocks were pretty cool, but Ogres and Hurlocks were much better in DAO IMO.
