I don't think the design of genlocks were perfect in DAO but Iiked them much more than the legacy version. The genlock emissary bothered me though as dwarves can't wield magic it broke immersion for me a little.
Dwarves cannot connect to the Fade, which is why they cannot use magic.
However, it has been confirmed that the Darkspawn do not draw their magical power from the Fade, but instead from the power of the Taint itself. So genlocks could wield magic.

As I wrote in my previous post, I think they should have gone more "horror" with the darkspawn to escape the generic "orc/goblin" look. Matt Rhodes was absolutely right in his perspective on the darkspawn in DAO. The image below on the left is what I hope they steer more closely to in DAI because the image is far more disturbing, far more evocative, and far less than traditional "bad-race" images in most high/popular fantasy:
As an aside, I think the earlier designs for Flemeth were far more interesting than what they ended up (and I actually liked the redesigned Flemeth, even if it was DRASTICALLY different from the character we meet in DAO.
Agreed.
Especially those dress designs for Flemeth. Those were terrific. I don't know why they went with weird hair horns and sexy leather.

The darkspawn in DA2 were way too...clean looking, while the DAO versions looked all gross and gritty. So yeah, I'm in favour of going back to the nasty gritty versions since they are corrupted elves/humans and dwarves.

The darkspawn in DA2 look like they came out of a cartoon.

Also, I hope they bring back the speaking ones, they were interesting.

I hope so. I want them to go back to the Origins look. But with the polish of Frostbite 3.

That would be terrifying, id like to see the lidless eye concept in emissarysHrungr wrote...
Since it seems that they're going to stick to something closer to the DA2 darkspawn, there are some elements in this concept art like. Big, lidless bloodshot eyes, gaping black maw...

I'm sure we will see them, even if only briefly. Perhaps we have to go into the Deep Roads for something, or perhaps we will pass by a DR opening on our random travels somewhere. Hell, even in Asunder there is a minor encounter with darkspawn.Zanallen wrote...
I would rather we not see darkspawn at all in DA:I. They are terrible enemies.

If I saw this primitive looking bastard in either DA game, I would have pissed myself, that dude is freaky lookin'.Hrungr wrote...

What are your thoughts on the previous redesign and do you think there will or should be another one?
I have to say every time I see the part with the Hurlock in the above picture I chuckle quite a bit because all I can think about are the Goombas from the Mario Brothers live action movie. That being said, I think the idea of the change for DA 2 was a good one, but the execution was a bit poor. Genlocks were pretty cool, but Ogres and Hurlocks were much better in DAO IMO.
