I've recently been introduced to Steam and, thus far, I like it very much. I also have a retail copy of Dragon Age: Origins. Do you think it will be possible to purchase Awakening via Steam and use it with my retail copy of DA:O? I understand that you can't register a retail copy of DA:O with Steam so maybe Steam won't even let you download an expansion if you don't already have the original game registered with them. I honestly have no idea and would appreciate some clarification.

Thank you.

Not sure--it would probably be best to make an inquiry on the Steam site and ask them. I also have sort of the reverse question--can I buy a retail version of the expansion while having gone through Steam for DA:O? Oh well, when the time comes, I'll go ask them.

It's confirmed that the Steam version of the expansion only works with the Steam version of DAO. You're out of luck. You can check it on the Steam website page for Awakening.

Like the poster above me, I'm in the other situation, can I or can I not purchase retail or EA store Awakening  to go with my Steam version of DAO?

That sucks. Most of the time I get my games digitally (more through steam then anyother D2D service.) I have found steam to be VERY reliable, efficient, and having great tech support as well as forums. Only time I don't buy from them is when I get collectors editions.

I'm surprised it wouldn't work though. You can very easily mod steam games, the same way you would a hardcopy... with a few minor exceptions.

Guess nothin's perfect right?

May have something to do with the import save features, perhaps it requires the same .exe to read off of or something along those lines. I wonder if it's just for Steam or if you must use the same DD/retail as the original game. Would be a shame as I have enough blue points from Gamersgate that I could have gotten Awakening for $5-$10.

The EA Download Manager WILL accept a Steam CD Key, and allow you to download the EA Digital version of the game.

Since you can obtain a non-Steam version of the game from EA using your Steam key, I would assume that it would be possible to buy the EA Digital Download version of Awakening and use it with your EA Digital Download version of the game that you obtained with your Steam CD key.

I doubt that a retal or EA download version of Awakening will work with the Steam version of the game, however.

I posed this question in a Steam forum and all of the feedback I received indicated that Steam purchases are only compatible with Steam purchases.

I did not know that I can just download DAO from the EA site with my Steam key, thanks for bringing that to my attention, I might just do that now :)

On a related note, I preordered Dragon Age Awakening through Steam and I'm not seeing it fogged out in the My Games tab like I usually do for preorders. I contacted Steam support about it last week but still haven't heard back from them. Is anyone else not seeing it so I don't have to panic? I confirmed that the purchase was applied to my account.
