Okay. Here is a thing you can rely on.

Go to Metacritic but ignore the scores.
Look at what people said about the game.
Look for both frequently occuring criticisms and frequently occuring praises of the game.

If you're only interested in average scores Metacritic will be unhelpful.
If you're interested in what both professional and non professional critics have to say about the game, then Metacritic is very useful.

Ah, Metacritic. Bioware employees also write glowing reviews about Bioware games there, giving 10/10 scores. Just saying.

I'll say it again.

Ignore the scores.
Look for common themes.
Look for common complaints.
Look for common praises.

Social media is all about repeating whatever the previous writers wrote, no matter if you actually played the game, red the book, watched the movie and so on.

You wont get a realistic estimate just by looking at what people are repeating.

True, but at least they may have actually played the game to reach this conclusion. Non-users spamming 0/10 votes to torpedo a game or company is possibly a better reason not to use the site.

I'll play it myself and make my own conclusion. The only review you can 100% trust is your own.

10/10 and 0-1/10 scores are practically worthless, since they tell you more about the person writing the review than the game itself.

Problem with that is that you have to buy the game to know if it's worth buying.

Oh well, that's what Steam sales are for. Oh right, this won't be on Steam :pinched:

Do people besides me shred their proof of purchase out the door or something?

more often then not if i don't care for a game due to its storytelling, game breaking glitches, controls or interface or what have you i return it.

I am Preodering DAI but that doesn't mean i won't shove it back in their faces if it isn't worth my time.

It's quicker say what people in internet (general speaking) aren't butthurt about something.

Yes, yes, we know. EA's evil....However, I don't believe Bioware would let this sort of thing happen. That being said, I trust reviewers like LadyInsanity and Gamermd83 to do the game justice, and review it well.

Secondly, I am a firm believer in reviewing a game for oneself, rather than trusting game review sites.

People say they don't trust professional reviews but you can't put much stock in player reviews especially on places like metacritic. Because too many people take a rabid absolutist approach. To them a game is either a perfect 10 or a 0 with no redeming qualities. Like someone earlier said ignore the scores and see what people are actually saying about what they think of gameplay, features n characters etc...

Various petty things that distract from the campaign's surprsingly strong choice and consequence system.

I'll put this bluntly, you cannot trust big reviewers like IGN, period. One of the reviewers, Jessica Chobot,  got a job as voice actress in ME3, playing Diana Allers. Then that game got a perfect 100/100 score. Do you honestly think that is a coincidence?

Go for smaller reviewers like Angry Joe, he has NO problem saying things how it is, poison or not.
Also wait for replies on various forums, etc.

After DA2 and ME3 we have reason to be cautious. After EA giving Bioware another year to polish off DAI we also have reason for hope. Time will tell which wins out.

Don't know about the review, but once I was informed on how to avoid the profanity, the game itself was terrific. While I am not a fan of Star Children (eg: V the mini-series) and philosophical double-speech, I am also OK with the conclusions.

Sometimes a positive review is warranted, though your own opinion may differ.

Hey all. I got linked to this thread today and wanted to bring up a few thoughts since I'm a content creator focused on Dragon Age. This campaign influencer situation is kind of a touchy subject, and while I addressed this with my viewers, I thought I'd give my insight.

As a "Youtuber", the only thing I can expect from my viewers is that they don't take my opinion for face value. Feel free to listen, dissect, and assess at your leisure; however, what I want you to do coming out of a video is to gain a more informed opinion that can help you construct your own.

I hope all of you approach any Youtuber telling you whether to play or not play a game with the same view. Just because one person says it sucks doesn't mean you won't enjoy yourself. Conversely, just because one person says it's really good doesn't mean you won't kick it after an hour.

Everyone has a different perspective, whether you see a review from me, MD, IGN, Kotaku, or your local random Joe. Everyone draws from a different experience with the franchise. I hope you all are able to trust that your reviewer will at least give you a fair, constructive opinion for you to think on. But, of course, choose your sources carefully.

(On a personal level, I will be loving...but firm with my review. I've sunk a lot of time into DA - that's transparent with my channel. However, I will always be frank when gameplay's missing something or an element can be done better. It's not worth lying when a problem is glaring you in the face. The only way to solve it is by giving constructive feedback and hoping the devs will address it in a patch or down the line. At least, that's my philosophy. Angry loud noises never work. But, that's how I personally run. Experience with other reviewers may vary, heh heh)

I really don't care. I don't look at reviews to make informed purchases. I've never bought a game that was influenced by reviews. I don't care what other opinions have to say. The only thing that matters is my own. With the digital age running right now, I can get all the information I need to know before a game/review comes out to make an informed purchase. 99.9% of the time my instincts are correct. I rarely buy a game that disappoints me.

I still don't understand why people care about a single person's opinion when they review a game. You should just think for yourself and do your own research before buying a game. Nothing can stay secret on the internet anyway. But yea, I think basing purchases on reviews is an extremely ignorant way to buy something. You can use it to inform you but you should never base an entire purchase off one.

I think it's sad some people use metacritic to buy games. And yes, it's a major problem in the gaming industry.

Doesn't work on PC games.

Yes, i've sometimes looked at gameplay videos, but it's different to actually play it. And also it doesn't help to see how good a game runs on my system. Though EA has been pretty good at publishing demos, maybe this will get one too.

Wait...so were afraid of non-disclosure agreements that the youtube community signed up for to be paid for their time and effort?

And were on EA's case for the youtube community taking money and agreeing to this? I'm sorry, but the blame should go all around here in the end. EA is basically doing what they should do, offering a contract for services to video entertainers. It is the choice of the producer to follow their contract or not, or suffer legal ramifications. From exeperience, I can tell you this is something that is pretty common, we have had video producers on our own site be approached with contracts such as this.

If you are going to be outraged about anything, be outraged that your video entertainers knowingly witheld information so they can make money off of it by you watching their reports. Hell, the language in the piece implies nothing but avoiding discussing bugs and glitches in the game, it says little about the game quality. In fact, none of it discusses how the reviews are positive or negative, it just creates stipulations on what to talk about and the decorum of the lets play.

As for trust. That is up to you. I think the better thing to do is question why you trust anything outside of yourself to begin with.

How will we be able to trust BioWare & Dragon Age: Inquisition's reviewers now?

For the most part, I avoid anything outside of trusted peer's opinions as well as what I've seen based on Gameplay Videos and such. Just because a game reviewer gives an upcoming title giant thumbs up doesn't mean it's a game you'll enjoy. There are too many factors/variables to account for, i.e. one's preferences & tastes for gaming.

My advice is to take a look at online previews/details to see if it's for you.

So far from what I've seen, Dragon Age: Inquisition looks like a very entertaining game that will surpass DA2, and may meet on par with DA:O. Graphically on par with TW2, and worlds better than DA2. Not much else to say as the previews I've seen were nearly all combat, with one conversation scene.

Now, it appears the floodgates have opened, and more YouTubers are coming forward to reveal a dark side of the Let’s Play video making community. The latest report suggests Electronic Arts deployed a similar promotional campaign for their products – paying YouTubers to record positive videos – and also forced the video makers to keep the agreement secret.

Talk about cunundrum.

All those positive "Dragon Age" and "Mass Effect" reviews were paid off?

I don't think you even read the article. What you are saying has nothing to do with reviews.
