Are the Charm/Intimidate options even worth it?

I was thinking that they would be great since you would get more Paragon/Renegade options on the conversation wheel but I see a lot of people spec out of it. How useful is it, exactly?

You don't need to put points into either skill, as you gain points in each from your conversations with people; you also get an automatic bumb of points in each once you become a Spectre - just do several playthroughs (NG+) to get both Charm/Intimidate to their 12 pt. maximum.

It is mostly only useful from a narrative perspective, but you can avoid some fights with them.
Whether or not you want to invest in them should depend on if you are planning to play the character through the game more than once. If you want all your options, you will need to invest since you only get 4 free points (technically you can get 4 free points for both, but it usually requires glitching to get both Paragon and Renegade high enough).
You need 10 Intimidate to be able to pass every intimidate check (except for a Saren one that you can bypass if you use charm / intimidate on him earlier in the game), or 12 Charm (although the only one that requires 12 is Ethan Jeong, and of course a similar Saren one to the above).

I did manage to intimidate Saren into redemption by investing in intimidate points. Forget about Jeong, though. He just needs to be shot. The charm dialogue there is pretty lame.
